The Roki Sasaki sweepstakes are on and every team is trying their best to get their hands on him. Ever since the Chiba Lotte Marines posted the amazing pitcher, teams have taken a major interest in him. Since money is not a factor here, what Sasaki will see is if the team can provide him with the best facilities. The Japanese phenom is a client of Joel Wolfe.  

Wolfe made Sasaki’s wishes known to the public recently. Sasaki wants a team where he can grow. That means he wants a team that has a great pitching, developmental, and health program. All three factors scream Dodgers. But do the Dodgers really need Sasaki right now? According to a sportscaster, the answer is no.

Do the Dodgers need Roki Sasaki?

Jordan Shusterman was joined by guest host Kiley McDaniel of ESPN on the Baseball Bar-B-cast as they took a look at the latest news surrounding Sasaki.  They discussed which teams have made their pitch, why some teams didn’t seem to bother, and why the San Diego Padres appear to need the talents of the pitcher in their rotation more than anyone else. One of the sportscasters said, “Dodgers do not need Sasaki right now.” But why is that?

Some may say that the Dodgers have too much pitching depth. But you know what? The Dodgers storyline in their 2024 campaign showed us why it is better to always have more. While they did manage to secure a World Series title, the postseason journey was far from smooth sailing when it came to the starting rotation. The Dodgers 2024 playoffs underscored just how quickly injuries and fatigue can pile up. Even with an elite bullpen, the reliance on bullpen games could have easily backfired if not for timely performances from role players and a deeper-than-usual bullpen.

The Padres might be a better fit

The Padres are in a pretty tricky spot financially, with several big contracts already on the books for key players. Despite the immense talent on the roster, the team’s financial flexibility is limited due to these long-term commitments. Adding a high-profile, expensive starting pitcher might be a tough sell unless they can shed some salary or find more creative ways to balance the books.

This is where a pitcher like Roki Sasaki, could be a perfect fit. Sasaki is a young phenom with an electric fastball which would be a major asset for a team like the Padres. Plugging in an elite talent at a league-minimum salary would not only provide them with a future ace, but it would also allow them to allocate more financial resources toward addressing other areas of need, like improving depth or fortifying their bullpen.

That said, there’s still the question of whether the Padres can pull off a deal for him, considering Sasaki is one of the hottest young pitching prospects right now.
