The Los Angeles Dodgers are all set to introduce their new shortstop – Mookie Betts. Even though he is one of baseball’s most versatile players, this decision has fans divided. Identified for his elite play in the outfield, Betts tried his hand at shortstop in 2024 with mixed outcome. And the speculation of moving him to second base is long gone. So, like it or not, this season would be full of surprises!

Not to deny that there are issues with moving him to the infield. But would it establish more problems in an already tough NL West and help the Dodgers close a vital defensive gap? Could this be a risk for the team?

Mookie’s experimental period at shortstop in 2024 was tough. Over 531 innings at the position, he committed 9 errors, posting a .963 fielding percentage. Mookie’s fights were apparent, with throwing issues and defensive lapses, guiding to a -0.6 dWAR. Despite having an offensive prowess, his defensive play at shortstop was subpar, casting questions on his appropriateness for the spot.

Then, why would the Dodgers choose him? Well, they are facing an infield gap with Gavin Lux recovering from injury and Chris Taylor’s inconsistency at shortstop. Mookie Betts’ flexibility is something positive despite his defensive challenges. His powerful 2024 offensive season, containing a .307 average and 39 home runs, totally enhanced the Dodgers lineup. And hence, Dave Roberts, manager of the Dodgers remains confident, Mookie in the infield is something I feel really good about”. In addition, his offensive assistance and adaptability can be a good thing for the team.

For the Dodgers, this decision could affect their 2025 season. If Betts does not solidify the shortstop role, the team has backup. There is Chris Taylor, who posted a .237 average with 12 home runs in 2024. Don’t forget Miguel Rojas! Identified for his defensive skills, he hit .244 in the same season. Then there is Tommy Edman, a versatile player with solid fielding and a .253 average in 2024.
