It’s been a while since the Chicago Cubs have been battling to patch their roster up. Little did they know that this 23-year-old arm would step up like he belonged all along. The ongoing injury setbacks made it challenging for the Cubs to be optimistic about their matchup against the New York Mets. Amidst the uncertainty, this pitcher was called up from Triple-A and has helped the Cubs notch a 6-5 win against the Mets.

Sure, all MLB debuts are special, but when the player’s family is in the stands, it’s one of a kind. Yes, as Cade Horton made his first appearance on the major league mound, it was his parents’ presence that took center stage.

FOX Sports captured this moment beautifully. And Ken Rosenthal had a chat with Horton’s parents, who wouldn’t miss their son’s debut for the world. Rosenthal asked Horton’s father, “What is it like for you watching your son make a major league debut?” And his response was nothing short of heartwarming.

He beautifully stated, “Just kind of surreal as parents. It’s a lifelong dream for him.” Horton’s mom, sitting right there, revealed that Horton’s siblings and his niece are also present. She revealed that she was in a parking lot when she found out that her son had been called up for the majors to play for the Cubs.

If anything, Horton’s debut is a dream realized with his entire family in the stands rooting for him.

Interestingly, the timing couldn’t have been better for the Cubs. Throughout this season, they have battled painful injury setbacks. Shota Imanaga, their key ace, was sidelined with a left hamstring strain. Not to forget Justin Steele, whose absence left a major gap in the lineup due to his apparent elbow surgery.

Adding to the list, it’s Javier Assad who was moved to the 60-day injured list. So, amid this crushing injury crisis, Cade Horton’s presence might be a sign that things are shaking up for good for the Cubs.

His first at-bat was against Brandon Nimmo. Horton struck him out with a phenomenal 96 mph fastball. And the Cubs’ nation couldn’t help but cheer loudly for their new favorite. It also marks Horton’s first-ever strikeout in the major league. Against the Mets, he threw 4 innings and allowed 3 runs on 4 hits. Moreover, the right-hander struck out five hitters and walked none.

Horton’s performance during his Triple-A period was just as dominant. With a 1.24 ERA, he is placed as the No. 2 prospect for the Cubs. When it comes to overall ranking in MLB Pipeline, he stands at No. 46.

He’s a great addition to the Cubs if you think about it. He gave the league a glimpse of his command. The way he mixes his pitches is noteworthy. He didn’t let it get to him when Brett Baty delivered a three-run homer during the fourth inning. In fact, he stayed composed and helped the Cubs stay in a 4-3 lead anyhow.
