The Boston Red Sox had a terrible 2022 season in what was a surprising collapse for the team. They went from winning 92 games in 2021 to just 78 in 2022. Furthermore, they went from a playoff team in 2021 to the bottom of the AL East in 2022. It doesn’t look like it’s going to get any better as the Red Sox have had an average off-season so far.

They lost their franchise star Xander Bogaerts this off-season, in addition to several other key players. The Red Sox have also failed to add enough talent to replace what they have lost this year alone. One of their stars recently opened up on the 2022 season and openly criticized the team’s approach.

Enrique ‘Kike’ Hernandez is a super utility player for the Boston Red Sox. Over the years, he has been an outstanding and versatile fielder with average batting ability. Most recently, Hernandez said that the Red Sox lacked ambition in 2022 and were content with being in the last place in the AL East. He also said that the Red Sox should be competitive every year. The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier shared Hernandez’s comments via Twitter.

According to Speier, Hernandez said, “I don’t think this is an organization that should settle for last place. We are an organization that should be competing year in and year out and we need to find a way to get back into that winning mentality”. Hernandez signed a 1-year $10 million extension to stay with the team for the 2023 season.

Although the pitching looks to be a bit better from last year, they have lost a lot of power-hitting due to Bogaerts and Martinez leaving. Furthermore, they have an unproven new signing in Masataka Yoshida. It will be an interesting season for the Red Sox to say the least.
