When Dave Dombrowski said, “First of all, to me, Bryce Harper is one of the best players in the game of baseball… I don’t think he had an elite year… I’ve been reading that all the Phillies may trade Bryce Harper. That couldn’t be further from the truth. We love him, ” Bryce Harper did not take it lightly.

“I’ve given it my all to Philly from the start. Now there’s trade talk. I made every effort to avoid this. It’s all I heard in D.C. with the Nationals and I hated it. It makes me feel uncomfortable.” Harper opened up to The Athletic. Now, enter former Marlins president David Samson, who thinks Dombrowski’s statement was not just to critique Harper’s play, but it has a direct link to the Phillies star, Kyle Schwarber.

David Samson’s analysis on Nothing Personal with David Samson points out that the Phillies president’s statement was no accident. “Do we think that Dave Dombrowski met the media and talked about Bryce Harper, and it just came off the top of his head?” The former Marlins president asked rhetorically.

“Do we think for a minute that Dave Dombrowski is so bad at his job that he started talking about Bryce Harper and had no idea what he was saying? Or do you think that Dave Dombrowski knew exactly what he was saying and he was sending a message not just to Bryce Harper but to the agent of Schwarber?” Samson added.

As per Samson, the situation was a planned move focused on the team’s financial strategy for 2026. Harper is locked in a long-term deal, 13 years and $330 million, and Kyle Schwarber is set to enter free agency. So, the Phillies president’s statement could act as a reminder to the fans that “stupid money” spending will not continue.

Meanwhile, Jim Bowden from The Athletic has predicted that Schwarber’s value could reach $160 million for 5 years. And this just raises the issue one level higher.

Schwarber, in this season, made history with his swings. We cannot forget his powerful swing in the fourth inning of the Phillies’ 8-2 victory in a must-win Game 3 of the NLDS against the Dodgers. But can the team afford Schwarber’s nine-figure commitment and Harper’s $330 million deal together?

David Samson’s statement points out that the Phillies president’s non-elite statement for Harper was not given to insult the veteran. It was thrown to prepare the fans and Harper’s agent for the upcoming decisions.

While Samson’s narrative added a new layer to the situation, another insider now thinks that the Phillies need to release Schwarber.

Not everyone is in favor of the Schwarber and Phillies tie

Kyle Schwarber has captured the spotlight of the Phillies’ offseason dilemma. And, why not?

He has posted an MVP-caliber season, and that is why Sportrac projected that Schwarber can command a $99.6 million deal for four years. Yet, the debate is not whether the veteran deserves that amount; it is focused on whether the team can afford the star. Plus, not all insiders think that Kyle can add more value to the team.

Matt Grazel from the TBOH said that “the Phillies should not re-sign Schwarber to a multi-year contract.” What Grazel is saying is that Schwarber is elite; however, the veteran is in his mid-30s. So, it will be risky to pay such a hefty amount to someone whose production could decline.

Now, the team is at a crossroads.

Either Dombrowski will need to reward his team’s face and keep their power core intact, or focus on future investment and long-term flexibility. The decision could effectively shape their 2026 or could push Dombrowski towards more scrutiny.
