The MLB community has mourned the passing of several beloved figures, each a gem in the sport’s crown. Every loss transcends the game, shaking us to our core. And this time, the tragic loss is not just missing a name from the diamond. It is about losing a Good Samaritan to a heroic fight.

Today, we remember one such figure, not just for his promising days on the diamond. But for the final, selfless act that defined his legacy. Former MLB prospect Chase Childers, a man who once chased dreams under stadium lights, gave his life in the line of duty, wearing a different kind of cap. A police officer committed to protecting and serving, Childers died in a heroic effort to save others, embodying the truest spirit of sacrifice.

Because sometimes heroes wear caps and badges, too!

Childers, a former minor league baseball player and ex-Cobb County police officer, tragically passed away on July 13, 2025, at age 38 while heroically trying to save others. Reportedly, during a trip to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, the Dallas resident jumped into a dangerous rip current to rescue a group of four to five swimmers who were struggling in the water. He lost his life during the rescue attempt.

When authorities got to the scene, Childers was the only swimmer unaccounted for, according to police. And after an extensive search involving officers, firefighters, and the U.S. Coast Guard, his body was found.

“He died trying to save others,” the official report confirmed the news.

Childers was drafted by the Orioles in 2009. That marked the start of his career in MLB, according to the league. He spent time playing in the minors before eventually shifting paths. Notably, he has played 50 games in the minors, scoring 21 runs at a .195 batting average.

Chase Childers served for several years as a police officer in Cobb County, Georgia.

The entire incident happened with his wife and three children present in the scene. We understand how difficult it is going to be for the family. We pray for their strength in this challenging time.

“These funds will go to support Nataley and their sweet children as they try to heal from the painful loss of Chase, who was tragically taken from this world far too soon and will always be remembered as a Hero,” the official GoFundMe campaign description reads.

So, all of the donations will go directly to his wife, Nataley, and their children to help them cope and begin adjusting to life without him. This support for the campaign shows the love for the former MLB prospect from the community.

While we are yet to see the greats of MLB pouring out their tributes for Childers, a state of shock is prevailing in the community. Expected, considering the suddenness of the incident.
