“Fire Boone for the love of the fans,” the chant has probably been going on since April! Right now, the once-dominant Bronx Bombers have hit a staggering low, losing 11 of their last 20 games and sliding down to second place in the AL East.
Offensively, the numbers are grim. They’ve scored just 7 runs or fewer and struck out over 60 times in a 7-game stretch, a first in American League history, posted New York Yankee Stats on their X handle. Defensively, it’s no better, either. Shortstop Anthony Volpe is now tied with the most fielding errors in the majors (12). And it seems like Aaron Boone can finally see the glum Bombers. As observed by the commentator in Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays, “…see the frustration from Aaron Boone, not only with the strike zone, but the way his club is playing defensively.”
In fact, after Monday’s 4-1 loss against Toronto, Boone finally acknowledged that Volpe is making “a few too many” fielding errors. And amid all this chaos, a former Yankee has stepped up in support of the manager.

The 2019 Bomber, Cameron Maybin, revealed what the team really thinks about the firing calls surrounding Aaron Boone.
Referring to Aaron Boone’s recent interview on Talkin’ Yanks, Maybin shared on Foul Territory, “The problem is the fandom that comes into play, and I love Boonie’s answers. This is why I’m the biggest Boonie advocate because I played for the man. Fans can say what they want. They want to fire Boone; they want this and that. The players in the clubhouse love Aaron Boone. He said it, ‘Everybody’s different.’ The Pinstripes – it’s different. The expectation is different. You can say what you want: ‘They are not the Yankees of old, they haven’t won it so long.’ It doesn’t matter…”

The clubhouse’s love probably has its reason, too. If we talk about Wednesday’s game only, it shows how the skipper stands by his team. At the beginning of the game, home plate ump Manny Gonzalez ruled a high pitch to be a third strike to Oswald Peraza that got Boone upset. While Gonzalez later acknowledged the same to be a missed call, the seventh inning saw a repetition with Anthony Volpe. The dugout was visibly upset.
Next, Gonzalez ejected someone from the dugout. Unsure of who it was, Boone walked up to the diamond to find out it was pitching coach Matt Blake. But on his way to the dugout, Aaron Boone turned back to point something to Gonzalez, and got ejected, marking the 4th one this year. Then there was that expected skipper-ump faceoff. Later, Boone shared, “I just went out there to see and then he kind of lost his mind on me.” Probably, this support is what has led to some fans being on the skipper’s side.
But meanwhile, Cameron Maybin isn’t happy with how most fans are reacting to Boone’s Talkin’ Yanks interview. He exclaimed further, “Watching this, it let me know I need to be careful about going back and forth with fans in the future. Because there are just some things that fans will never understand. And again, Jomboy Media has done an excellent job. This is just a great example of fans not truly understanding what players, managers, and people in the trenches have to go through.”
What’s your perspective on:
Are fans too harsh on Boone, or do they have a point about the Yankees' performance?
Have an interesting take?
Just on July 21, Maybin explained on his X handle why the Bleacher Creatures are always so tough. “The pressure in New York comes from the expectation that every game, every inning, and every at-bat matters… You’re not just playing the game. You’re carrying the weight of legends who wore the pinstripes before you,” read the post. Of course, we are talking about a team who have had Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, and so many others.
So, probably, just blaming the manager won’t make sense. As mentioned by Boone himself, “Just a couple calls [the missed calls on Wednesday] not going our way, but that wasn’t our issue tonight. We gave them too many outs.”
Wednesday night saw 4 errors from the Pinstripes. Throwing errors from Max Fried and Jazz Chisholm Jr., fielding errors from Ben Rice and Jasson Domínguez. Plus, Cody Bellinger lost a fly ball, and after Fried’s errant throw in the 5th inning, no one was there on the plate to cover for the same. After the game, Aaron Judge shared, “We haven’t been playing that well on defense. We’ve got a lot of things we’ve got to clean up.”
In fact, the New York Yankees have made 52 errors in 102 games, as reported by ESPN. While error-free baseball lands them at 41-22, just one miscue makes them stand at 15-24. This shows the manager is not the only one to blame.
Still, it might make sense for fans to be unable to get over Boone’s last interview on Jomboy Media.
Boone’s recent outburst shows what the future looks like for the Yankees
Boone recently appeared on Jomboy’s Talkin’ Yanks podcast and wasn’t particularly thrilled with some of the questions coming his way. When asked about the team’s performance, specifically their record against division rivals, Boone exclaimed that the hosts were “cherry-picking answers” and being overly critical.
In a tense exchange, Boone stated his players were not “robots,” after which Jomboy responded with a demand for more “non-robotic” answers. The skipper shot back. “I don’t care what you want… I want our guys in a good, like, boom. We are locked in, when it’s s—– and when it’s really good, and all in between. I want us locked. I want us to show up every day ready to prepare and ready to go. Period. It’s a hard game.”

Previously, in the same podcast, when Boone was asked about his players’ comments, he had responded, “Everyone’s different. Stop with the reaction of how a guy answers a frickin’ question. Seriously!”
Well, Boone is confident about getting the Yankees out of the slump. “We gotta win. OK? We are obsessed with it and hell-bent preparation-wise, and guys give a rip,” he stressed on the same podcast. Now, to be fair, he did it once in September 2020, when, after a 5-15 stretch, the Yankees exploded for a 10-game winning streak that time.
Calls for Boone’s firing were also there in 2024, but the Yanks ended up as runners-up in the World Series. Yes, being in New York is all about winning the rings and nothing less. But if Maybin’s words are anything to go by, Boone might be the best man for the Yankees, at least for now, even though the fans are upset.

The Bronx Bombers are still in second place in the division, 4 wins behind the table topper, the Blue Jays. But it might still be early to hit the panic button. Next for the Yanks are the Red Sox, and Boone couldn’t have asked for a better chance to turn the tables – the archrival itself!
