The utility player’s versatility was a sight to see. So when he left the Pinstripes, a question emerged: was this a necessary breakup or did the Yankees fumble the bag with “team-first gamer”?

Brian Cashman has been a controversial figure among the fans for years. The World Series drought and a poorly managed roster have made him a major target for most of the Yankee Faithful. Though in the grand scheme of things, IKF may not be the biggest of losses, he may a symptom of a deeper problem in the Bronx ecosystem.

New York Yankees and Isiah Kiner-Falefa – An incomplete story

Isiah Kiner-Falefa was never a first-choice starter for the Yankees during his time there. Initially stationed behind Anthony Volpe as a shortstop, IKF gradually became a proper utility player. Coupled with his love for the Yankees, IKF became a loved figure in all of the Bronx fanbase.

When the Yankees brought in IKF, they expected him to be their long-term shortstop. It always seemed like an absurd demand from a player whose best numbers were in third base. As a result, the first year of IKF was all about adjusting. Just when he settled in, Kiner-Falefa yielded shortstop to rookie Anthony Volpe. So IKF was again back to square one.

As Brandon Tierney, the host at WFAN, said in his X post, Brian Cashman’s roster creation completely undermined what IKF was good at – Versatility. It took the Yankees more than a year to realize that IKF had the potential to become a super-utility player. So when the Bombers started using him properly, suddenly an unpopular IKF became a fan-favorite. 

Even though IKF was never a superstar, he didn’t need to be. IKF’s strength was in his reliability and versatility. When injuries ravaged the team, IKF was the first one to cover. That’s why fans are upset about the mismanagement by Cashman. A team is not made up of stars but these low-key players who get things done. But now that IKF has gone to the Toronto Blue Jays, they’ll find his versatility rather important.

How the Blue Jays might have struck gold

Even though IKF has transformed into a utility player, his best position remains the third base. The Yankees rarely explored this side of the 2020 Gold Glove awardee. On the other hand, it looks like the Blue Jays have signed him specifically to fill that position. The ex-Yankee might see a career revival with the Blue Jays.

While the Yankees fans are frustrated with his exit, this could be what turns things around for this 28-year-old. On the other hand, the fan war against Cashman continues. While 2024 being a make-or-break year for the Yankees, things are looking increasingly shaky for the righty.
