The start of the 2023 season has been very forgettable for Alek Manoah, who made his first All-Star and All-MLB First Team appearance in 2022. Seemingly, at this pace, the Blue Jays’ starting pitcher won’t make it to either. However, last night, Alek Manoah had a fairly decent start.

Throwing 5.2 innings, and 85 pitches, Manoah had conceded two runs with five hits and five strikeouts. In the middle of the sixth, with two outs and two people on base, Toronto Blue Jays skipper John Schneider visited the mound for a chat. And a simple chat ended up with Alek Manoah having to leave the mound.

Alek Manoah gets benched as Schneider’s memory takes a timeout

The issue arose because pitching coach Pete Walker had already made a visit earlier in the same inning before John Schneider visited the mound. And according to the rules, a second visit necessitates a pitching change by rule.

Manoah didn’t want to leave, but he was left with no choice. Following John Schneider’s blunder, three more runs were conceded as the game finished, with the Orioles winning 6-5 in the tenth innings. Manoah wasn’t the happiest but also didn’t display any frustration while walking out.

After the game, he said, ?There was just some silence. I had known Pete had come out there. When he started asking me if I wanted to stay in the game, I was like, ?Well, maybe Pete didn?t come out here?? I wasn?t sure. I told him I wanted to stay in and pleaded my case, but as he walked away, the umpire was like, ?Hey, that was your second visit.??
