The New York Yankees somehow survived the Houston Astros. Shockingly enough, they didn’t do just that but won 4-3 against the reigning World Series champions. The series still has three games left that will decide the fate of the Bronx Bombers, who are going through one of their worst seasons. And a play in the latest game showed why.

Sometimes, even major leaguers make mistakes. They’re embarrassing for sure, especially when made in front of a crowd as unforgiving as New York. As fans roared loudly at Yankee Stadium yesterday, they ripped into the team on social media as well.

Michael King Makes Grave Throwing Error Against Houston Astros

Once a promising player in pinstripes, Michael King has had more than a few rough outings lately. The pitcher made a strange play against the Astros yesterday, soon after making a bizarre claim against the team, which ended up costing the Yankees a run. Although, of course, the eventual win went to the home team, it could have proved more disastrous.

In the seventh inning, Yankee killer Jose Altuve hit a ground ball back at King on the mound. Although the pitcher quickly reacted to pick up the ball, it seemed like he was confused about what to do next as he threw the ball to second base. Point to be noted – there was no one at second base. Yankees’ shortstop Anthony Volpe caught the ball and hurried to throw it at first, but Altuve was long past the safe point.

It was a confusing few seconds, as even the announcer pointed out that Volpe couldn’t have done much else in the situation. King leaned both his hands on his knees, looking around the diamond, as if not quite believing what had just occurred.

New York Yankees Fans Cannot Believe the 2023 Season is Real

To say that it’s been a rollercoaster would be an understatement. From Aaron Judge missing almost two months because of a toe injury to Aaron Hicks’ Baltimore performance. From Josh Donaldson spending more time on the IL than on the field to Domingo German’s perfect game coming out of nowhere.

Not to mention Anthony Rizzo playing for two months with a concussion and the Yankees’ general rankings this season. It has been a wild ride.

Then came this play, which fans mocked bitterly.

Some fans felt Volpe could have done better.

One couldn’t help but mock the fact that the Yankees couldn’t diagnose the reason behind Rizzo going from one of the best to one of the worst so quickly.

Interestingly, it was Volpe who hit the tie-breaking home run, helping his team to victory. The rookie will undoubtedly face more struggles, but the point is how he rises above his mistakes. It will hopefully not be like the King.

The Yankees and Astros return on August 4th at 7.05 pm ET.
