“Fire Him”: Philadelphia Phillies Fans Revolt as Umpire Makes Egregious Call Against J. T. Realmuto During Spring Training

It seems like Baseball Umpires have a thankless job. They make tough, split-second calls daily. Fans and players criticize them despite this. Usually, this criticism may feel unjustified, but this wasn’t the case during a recent Philadelphia Spring Training game. In recent years, umpire’s decisions have become more erratic and sometimes downright bizarre. 

Most recently, the Phillies were the victims of a seemingly unjustified call that went against their catcher, J. T. Realmuto. In Spring Training, the Phillies were playing against the Toronto Blue Jays when the umpire made a bizarre call. This decision now has fans heavily criticizing the official.

The Philadelphia Phillies recently played against the Toronto Blue Jays in a Spring Training game. J. T. Realmuto was ejected from the game in the bottom of the 4th inning. Realmuto reached his glove out to the side to receive the ball from the umpire behind him. The Phillies catcher put his glove down just as the umpire was giving the ball to him. He was then ejected by the in-game official for this action. Jomboy media has shared a video of the incident on Twitter. 

In a Tweet, they said, “J. T. Realmuto got thrown out of the game for… this?” In the video, you can see Phillies’ Manager Rob Thomson immediately question the umpire about the decision. Baseball has seen many questionable decisions in recent years, but this is definitely one of the more bizarre ones.

The reactions to the umpire’s ejection decision have been brutal, with many criticizing him.

Some fans were outraged by the decision.

Other fans were calling for robots to replace human umpires.

The Phillies won the game 5-2 despite the egregious call by the umpire. The Philadelphia-based team has one more Spring Training contest before the MLB season starts. Phillies’ last few days have been a rollercoaster, with Rhys Hoskins’ injury and Aaron Nola’s contract issue. 2023 will be a huge season for the Phillies.

The Phillies are aiming for the World Series

In 2022, the Philadelphia Phillies won 87 games, finishing third in the NL East and qualifying for the postseason. During the playoffs they made a huge run, culminating in a World Series appearance which they lost. This season, they will be looking to make the World Series again and possibly win it.
