Back in 2017, the Yankees’ front office clearly signaled that they didn’t want an old-school manager like Billy Martin or Joe Torre when they hired an inexperienced Aaron Boone straight from the ESPN broadcast booth. Fast forward to today, the Yankees just suffered an embarrassing three-game sweep by the Boston. And they now hold an embarrassing 1-8 record with them this season alone. Who’s to blame?

At a time when the Bronx is burning, popular baseball account Foul Territory posted a photo of Boone, and captioned: “The replies are a judgment-free zone. Sound off, Yankees fans…” And as you can imagine, the judgment-free zone was anything but calm.

First, there’s their entire season’s collapse. They started the season like a dream, and they were 35-20 by their 55th game on May 28. Then came the summer swoon.

They recorded 13-14 and 12-13 in the months of June and July. And with a 9-11 record so far, August has been no better. The once dominant Yankees are now sitting 7 games behind the table toppers, third place in the division, ranking 25th in errors and 27th in double plays. They are now fighting for a wild-card spot.

But still, one bumpy season alone could never create this level of rage.

Fans urge Aaron Boone’s firing

For most of the fans, the issue is simple. One wrote, “they won’t do shit until they fire that b-m in this picture.” Boone’s managerial career of 8 years with Yanks looks impressive on the surface. But the reality is a 138-118 record.

Others feel the problem runs deeper. “the Worst thing that’s happened to this team in the last 20 years. Turned them into soft, mentally weak p****.” Take shortstop Anthony Volpe, for example. He has struggled badly on defense this year. After one very bad defensive play in Boston’s recent series, Boone justified it by calling it “a little bit of a heady play.”

What’s your perspective on:

Is Aaron Boone the Yankees' biggest mistake, or is there a deeper issue plaguing the team?

This frustration has many fans recall the time when the dugout was filled with players and coaches who bled pinstripes. “Bring in all former Yankees to manage/coach. Last time was Torre, Mattingley, Pena, Mazzini and Bowa. They cared, a lot.” The fan remembers Joe Torre’s era from 1996 to 2007, who guided the team to six American League (AL) pennants and four World Series championships.

These memories make the current situation even more painful, which made one fan say: “We got rid of Joe Girardi for this?! Girardi didn’t have Gerrit Cole’s arm or Giancarlo Stanton’s bat either.” And finally, one fan issued a warning against any false hope that might come from a late-season surge:

The fan’s point is that if the Yankees collapse now against teams like Boston, a strong finish against weak ones won’t even count.
