Florida Governor Sparks Outrage With Controversial Minor League Decision

As Florida’s governor throws his hat into the ring for the Republican presidential nomination in 2024, a closer examination of his governing style is inevitable. This Monday, Ron DeSantis signed 17 bills, including the one which has not only outraged Minor League baseball players but also people who are socially active.

After the unanimous decision of the state’s Republican-controlled senate, the Republicans signed the SB 892 bill. Prepared by MLB billionaire and multi-billionaire owners, the bill carved out the minimum wages for Minor League players. Soon after the agreement was signed, the news spread like fire on Twitter, sparking negative reactions towards both the decision and the decision-maker.

Jason Garcia, the Investigative Reporter of Florida, gave this update on Twitter. The tweet read, “Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis just signed a bill sought by billionaire owners of Major League Baseball teams that cuts minor league baseball players off from the minimum wage.” 

The tweet brought in fans’ take on this decision. According to most of the Twitter users, the decision was “unbelievable and disgusting.” On the other hand, some fans went as far as labeling DeSantis “Corrupt politician.”

Carrying forward to the conversation, Jason further wrote,One day after this legislation was filed in Tallahassee, Joe Ricketts, the billionaire founder of TD Ameritrade whose kids own the Chicago Cubs, gave DeSantis a $1 million donation. Major League Baseball hired the lobbying firm owned by one of DeSantis’ biggest Florida fundraisers and that now employs DeSantis’ former chief of staff,” Jason added.

The diligent reporter indicated two reasons for the same. One is the noteworthy $1 million donation received by DeSantis following this bill. And the second that MLB was lobbying in support of the legislation.
