Sports personalities are no strangers to injuries, but when there’s blood, things take a gruesome turn. Justin Turner of the Boston Red Sox recently went through a harrowing experience that left him with a particularly nasty wound. Facing off against the Detroit Tigers, Turner was standing in the batter’s box for a spring training game, ready for the next ball. When pitcher Matt Manning accidentally hit the third baseman on his head.

Turner immediately fell to the ground and looks of horror could be seen on the audience’s faces. The ball barely missed his helmet but thankfully didn’t cause any permanent damage. Sixteen stitches later, the 38-year-old gave an update that left Red Sox fans feeling relieved. Turner intends to return to the field as soon as possible, and his recent social media update proves it.

The Boston team decided to have a photoshoot for its roster last week, in preparation for the upcoming games. In a horrid twist of events, Turner got injured right in the first inning on March 7th’s game. But after clear scans and no fractures, Turner was thankful for his relatively non-major injury. When his team’s Instagram posted a picture, Turner re-shared it just an hour later.

In an earlier update, the third baseman shared, “Thanks to everyone for all the messages and prayers…I’m going to be back out on the field as soon as possible!” Turner’s wife also tweeted that he was recovering and resting at home, listening to a recap of the game.

Needless to mention, everyone around the 38-year-old was worried. As medical professionals rushed to help Turner, he ultimately walked down the pitch on his own two legs, clutching a towel to his bleeding face. The crowds cheered when he stood up because it meant good chances of a not-so-major injury.

“Anything that is above the shoulders, it’s always scary,” said Red Sox manager Alex Cora. “So you hear [it], you go and you just react. There was a lot of blood there. So it was just like, ‘Let’s get everybody there and try to help him out.’ He was coherent.”
