One of the most successful players on the baseball diamond, Derek Jeter, concluded his playing career in 2014. But that wasn’t the end of his ties with baseball. In 2017, he reconnected with his beloved sport in a new role. Notably, Jeter joined the Miami Marlins’ ownership group and also became the CEO of the franchise in 2017.

Jeter’s entire playing tenure got spent as the New York Yankees shortstop. Playing from 1995 to 2014, he remarkably won five World Series championships. In addition, he also made 14 All-Star appearances. While still active as a player, Jeter always wanted to own an MLB team post-retirement.

So Jeter bought shares as a co-owner of the Marlins and shifted base to Florida in 2017, settling in Miami. While Jeter participated in the auspicious occasion of Thanksgiving at Marlins’ Park that year, he got joined by the mayor of the city. Francis Suarez freshly won the elections and took command of the office at the time. CBS network caught up with Suarez for a brief interview at Marlins Park, and he highly praised Jeter.

When Miami’s mayor was in awe of Derek Jeter

Derek Jeter and Francis Suarez both took over administrative roles at Miami in their respective professions in 2017. The two of them were also present at the Thanksgiving celebrations in Marlins Park. There was a large public gathering for the festivities. While Jeter brought turkey meat for the giveaway as per traditional customs, Suarez brought a bag of potatoes.

Speaking to the CBS network at the location, Suarez said, “We have new ownership. You know, Derek is amazing. He’s been such a great brand for baseball. And I think he’s gonna be great for the city of Miami… So it’s an honor for me to be here with the Marlins organization. Doing what we all should be doing, good corporations should be doing. Which is giving back to those in need. Which is giving back to those in need. And so, for me, how can you not participate and be helpful?”

Suarez added saying, “I think he’s doing a fantastic job. Look at him, he’s giving out the turkey. I’m just giving out the potatoes.” Jeter, who then appeared at the scene, returned the appreciation by saying, “It is, great time of the year to give back.”

Derek Jeter’s record as the Miami Marlins CEO

Unfortunately, Jeter’s administrative reign with the Marlins was not as successful as his athletic tenure with the Yankees. He had a poor 218-327 win-loss record and most of his decisions faced critical backlash. Therefore, he abruptly resigned from the role in 2022.
