With the trade deadline fast approaching, MLB teams are shifting into high gear, scrambling to explore every possible upgrade. The San Francisco Giants have already made a loud statement with their blockbuster move on Sunday, landing Rafael Devers and injecting instant power into their lineup. But is one big bat enough? If they’re serious about a deep postseason run, they may still be one key piece away—and an Orioles star could be exactly what they’re missing.
Devers’ addition reflects the team’s plan for long-term roster stability. Alongside Jung Hoo Lee, first-base prospect Bryce Eldridge, Willy Adames, Matt Chapman, and Heliot Ramos, Devers could help shape a much stronger offense. But, they could still use another bat at second base. They have been struggling at second base; they rank 27th with an OPS of just .586. According to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon, Baltimore’s Ramón Urías could fill that void for the Giants.
With the season slowly slipping through their fingers after each game, it is obvious that the Orioles would be active in the market as sellers. The Athletic’s Tim Britton, Aaron Gleeman, and Eno Sarris had released a list of 30 top players who could expect a trade before July 31st. There were four Orioles players on the list, and their third baseman, Urías, was ranked at 29th. Throughout the season, he has played at multiple positions to fill in for injured players. So, he could be the second base solution for the Giants, too.

Urías is hitting .266/.323/.379/.702 from 51 games this season. He has also scored 4 home runs and 23 RBIs. The 31-year-old is at a manageable $11 million, which could be a plus for the Giants. His experience at all four infield spots also makes him a great attraction. New president of baseball operations, Buster Posey, has stepped up with some strategized big spending. Devers’ signing was the biggest deal in the Giants’ history. They now should go all the way and make their roster strong enough to challenge the Dodgers. They are currently 42-33 and 3.5 games behind the reigning champions. The team will look to add talent to strengthen their roster, but there’s already someone making noise in the minors.

Level rising in the Giant’s system
With Devers on the team, San Francisco now has a star, crowd-puller hitter. If they want, they have a chance to use a little bit more freshness. There is a name making waves in the Arizona Complex League. The 18-year-old Jhonny Level is an important prospect for the Giants. They had signed him to a minor league contract in 2024. And now, he has produced consistently as a shortstop.

Can Rafael Devers and a potential Urías trade make the Giants a real threat to the Dodgers?

He was recently listed as the top prospect who is pushing for a promotion from the minors for the Giants by the MLB. And guess what? The Venezuelan player is batting .286/.384/.537/.921 with seven home runs and 21 RBIs from the last 33 games this season. And, this Thursday, he added two more home runs against the Reds in the game.

“Level is just 18 years old, so there’s no need to rush him out of the Rookie-level Arizona Complex League, but he’s also a potentially special player who needs more of a challenge,” the authors wrote. The promotion might not come immediately, but Level is clearly a name to watch. No need to rush, the Giants still have time to decide.
