The tension is rising- not just on the field, but also in front offices, where executives are quietly plotting their next big move. Injuries are stacking up. Contenders are looking over their shoulders and somewhere in the mix, one team is sitting on a resource that could flip the narrative of their season — or someone else’s.

In Miami, Sandy Alcantara is back on the mound, while Chicago’s team is walking a tightrope with patched-up hands and rising desperation. As rumors swirl, one aspect is becoming clear that the Marlins are not just listening — they are ready to absolutely crush the trade game.

The Marlins have a unique resource on their hands in Alcantara. The 2022 Cy Young Award winner is the type of talent that can turn a playoff contender into a championship favorite. However, with the team fighting to stay competitive and Alcantara in the elite of his career, it is not surprising that trade interactions are gaining traction. As per David Samson, the team could be placing itself for an effective move. “The Marlins are gonna absolutely try to crush someone in a trade for Sandy,” the former Marlins Prez said, adding that the team is likely to pull off an “anti-trade” reminiscent of their deal which sent Marcell Ozuna to St. Louis.

However, what exactly does an “anti-trade” say in this situation? The team has a history of trading away established talents for high-value returns. Just look at the Ozuna trade in 2017. In that trade, the team secured a solid package of prospects from the Cardinals, which contained the likes of pitcher Sandy Alcantara himself. That worked out effectively for the team in the long run. Now, with Alcantara at the edge of his value and the Cubs in total need of a star to anchor their rotation, the question on every fan’s mind is: could the Marlins strike a similar deal and land a jackpot?

The star pitcher is signed through 2026 at an amount of $17.3 million for each season with a club option for 2027 which is carrying the tag of $21 million. This makes him Miami’s highest-paid player so far. And honestly? The club still has time to act on the whole Alcantara situation, given that they have an extra year of control.

Sandy Alcantara is returning to his form after a period of inconsistency. His current victory against the Nationals was a reminder that the star can bring grit, determination, and the capability to step up when it counts to the table. In the game against the Nationals, the 29-year-old allowed for four runs on five hits, which were all singles across 5 2/3 frames. Further, he issued four walks, which was only his second time doing so in three starts before Tommy John surgery.

As for the Cubs, their need for a proven starter is becoming more urgent by the day. With a roster which is been hampered by injuries and underperformance, acquiring Alcantara could be exactly what they need to salvage their season.

The Cubs rotation has been in flux, with vital players like Carson Kelly and Justin Steele (to undergo season-ending surgery to repair his flexor tendon and address the UCL damage) going through injuries. In addition, Seiya Suzuki is out of the starting lineup against the Dodgers owing to wrist issues. As of late, their pitching staff ranks in the middle of the league in ERA however, it is evident that without a true talent, the team could struggle to keep pace with MLab’s top contenders.

Other teams pursue Sandy Alcantara amid trade speculations

As trade rumors circulate related to Marlins ace Sandy Alcantara, multiple MLB clubs are highlighting interest in embracing the Cy Young Award winner. Notably, the New York Mets have been connected to Alcantara, with sources indicating that they are closely monitoring his situation. Mets players, including Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, have publicly inscribed the idea of bringing the 29-year-old pitcher to New York, emphasizing his potential effect on the bullpen’s rotation.

However, the Marlins have constantly maintained that Alcantara is not available for any trade deals right now, emphasizing his vitalness to the organization. Peter Bendix, the team’s president of baseball operations, addressed trade speculations early in the season, saying that it was too early to consider such developments. Alcantara himself has also responded to spreading trade rumors, expressing his happiness with the Marlins and aiming at competing regardless of external guesstimates.

As the season progresses, it will be interesting to see whether such trade talks gain traction and if Alcantara continues to anchor Miami’s pitching staff.
