Cleveland Guardians outfielder Myles Straw never saw this coming. One moment, he was grinding through his offseason workouts, locked in on another year with the Guardians. The next? He was at the center of a trade that sent him packing to the Toronto Blue Jays.

But this wasn’t just any trade—it was a calculated move by the Blue Jays, a gamble to land Japanese sensation Roki Sasaki. And when that gamble failed, Straw was left in an awkward position, suddenly wearing a Blue Jays uniform for reasons that had little to do with him.

“I was shocked and pretty excited about it,” Straw admitted, reflecting on the whirlwind trade. “New beginnings are always nice, especially with this team. I think it’s a fantastic team to be playing for, and I’m looking forward to the opportunity.” The trade, which saw the Jays commit $11 million to Straw’s contract to secure international bonus pool money, was meant to boost their chances of landing Sasaki. However, Roki chose the Los Angeles Dodgers; the Blue Jays found themselves with no Sasaki but an outfielder they hadn’t fully planned for.

Despite the surprising turn of events, Straw maintained a down-to-earth mindset. “I try to stay off social media as much as possible. It’s like whatever; it is what it is. Come here, play baseball, and try to prove myself again with a new team.” And surely a man of his word, Straw is making an impression.

With a .474 batting average and strong defense in the Grapefruit League, he’s proving his worth, even though he’s not yet on the team’s 40-man roster. The Blue Jays’ gamble may not have worked, but for Myles Straw, this trade is a stage to show what he’s capable of. What began as a surprising turn of events—being traded as a piece in the failed Sasaki pursuit—has now transformed into a chance for a fresh start.

Blue Jays Manager opens up about Roki Sasaki’s pursuit

The Toronto Blue Jays’ offseason felt like a high-stakes poker game, where every move could change the trajectory of their season. With their eyes set on one of the most coveted young players, Roki Sasaki, the team pushed all their chips to the center. But when the final cards were dealt, Sasaki chose the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving the Blue Jays to re-evaluate things.

Now, Blue Jays manager John Schneider is sharing his perspective on the intense, emotional process, giving fans a rare behind-the-scenes glimpse of this pursuit. “It was a big effort by a lot of different people,” Schneider shared, speaking about the exhaustive process. With multiple meetings, including one in Toronto and another in Los Angeles, the Jays were determined to show Sasaki how they could nurture his skills and help him thrive.

But despite their efforts, Roki chose the Los Angeles Dodgers.“We had players come up to meet him, Zoom calls with the organization—it was pretty in-depth,” Schneider explained. However, even though they couldn’t land Sasaki, the Blue Jays quickly regrouped and landed Max Scherzer. It wasn’t the pitcher they had initially hoped for, but Schneider is confident that Scherzer’s experience was one to root for.

And so, the chase continues, their eyes now on the future, as the Blue Jays prepare to face a new season.
