The Diamondbacks were just the new kids on the block when they suddenly found themselves the center of everyone’s attention. Within 2 years of existence, the D-Backs had made it to the NL Division title. And within 4 years it was the National League Champion Series. Rising through the ranks quicker than expected, fans were astounded.

Then came the 2001 World Series, the biggest stage of baseball. They were against the otherworldly New York Yankees, a team that had until then won 4 titles in the last 5 years, looking to win their 4th consecutive crown. The Dynasty was up against the Young Upstarts. A classic David vs. Goliath.

Then an abrupt twist, and suddenly the D-Backs were matching the almighty Yankees blow for blow. The series once thought to end quickly stretched to Game 7, and then to its 9th inning. The score stood 2-1 in favor of the Bronx. Luis Gonzales was at bat with the bases loaded. Phoenix was going out of its mind, waiting with bated breaths. Then it happened. Gonzo hit a single as Jay Bell sped across the home plate. And that was that; the Diamondbacks were World Series champs.

The Yankees had failed to win their 4th World Series in a row because a new champion had risen. The world wondered if the Diamondbacks would dominate the league for the foreseeable future. Unfortunately for the Grand Canyon State, it was the last time they were in the World Series. That is, until 2023.

Diamondbacks Look To Repeat History in 2023 World Series

When the 2023 season began, few believed that the Snakes would make it to the postseason. Even less believed that they would end up almost winning it all. But the team believed in itself, and the players knew that they had the heart, strength, and talent to aim for the highest of peaks. Their belief has sustained their performance so far, and here they now are, at the cusp of the greatest championship in the sport.

Though their regular season record was strictly an average 84-78, the D-Backs managed to qualify for the postseason. Part of the Wild Card series, their first opponent was the Brew Crew. An easy win for the Milwaukee Brewers was expected but of course, the Diamondbacks had different plans for the NL Central division toppers. They surprised the Brewers by winning the series in two straight games. If only rival teams realized this was a sign of things to come.

Next they faced the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS. Again, the division toppers Dodgers were favorites with a regular season record of 100-62. So what happened? LA choked as the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Dodgers in three straight games.

So now they had to face the Philadelphia Phillies, the team that played the World Series last year. Even though Arizona entered the NLCS undefeated, many favored Philly. They certainly were their toughest challenger yet. The series started with the Phillies thrashing the Diamondbacks in 2 games. ‘Was this the end of the fairytale?’ asked every fan. The Diamondbacks said, ‘It doesn’t end until we say it does’. The Snakes then did what they’ve always done – defy expectations, turn predictions into a joke, and become the creator of their destiny.

And they beat the Phillies. As the cherry on top, they did it at Citizens Bank Park, in front of a crowd that set records with the amount of noise they created for the home team.

The Next Challenge for the Snakes

The Arizona Diamondbacks now face the Texas Rangers in the Fall Classic. The Rangers won a historic ALCS against the Houston Astros, but fans wonder who will prevail.

One thing is certain, the 2023 World Series will be unforgettable. Will the ultimate underdogs repeat history and win their 2nd World Series? Or will the Rangers finally win one after years of waiting?
