World Series is a competition between the champions of both these leagues. What this means is that two teams from the same league cannot ever face each other in the Fall Classic. So this is where the problem arises for the Yankees and Red Sox, they both belong to the same league, i.e., the American League.
Hence, sadly for the fans, playing the World Series against each other is impossible. But that does not really mean that the fans are missing out on anything. The Yankees and Red Sox have played each other multiple times in the postseason and almost all of those times were extraordinarily intense.
An unforgettable moment from the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry
The rivalry popularly started in the 1920s when the Boston Red Sox sold the legend Babe Ruth or Bambino to the Pinstripes. Before the “Curse of the Bambino” hit the Red Sox, they were a dominant team. But fortunes changed so rapidly that the New York Yankees became the most successful team in MLB while Beantown faced an 84-year World Series drought.

They always finished near each other but the Yankees would always prevail. This continued till 2004. That was the year of “The Idiots”, the Red Sox team known for its devil-may-care attitude. The most famous moment of that rivalry came in that year’s ALCS.
The Bombers were leading the series by 3-0. Red Sox fans wondered if luck was again favoring their rivals. That’s when during the last inning of game 4, David “Big Papi” Ortiz came to bat. And then in what was to be most iconic moment in his illustrious career, Ortiz hit a walk off Home Run. Boston Red Sox ended up winning that series and the Fall Classic, thus ending their 84-year-old drought.
