For some people, playing sports is a hobby. It’s something they do in the mornings or evenings to give their bodies some exercise. But for some, a sport is a passion. It consumes them so fully that they make careers out of it. And when one is a pro athlete, their sport is all they see. Just look at Michael Phelps and the absurd amount of practice he put in before the 2008 Olympics. But just as Phelps cared about swimming, Derek Jeter cared about baseball.

Unanimously known as the Captain, Jeter became one with baseball whenever he stepped onto the field. He gave his all to every game he played, and he played to win. But that laser focus on one thing meant he couldn’t quite focus on other aspects of his life. Like his personal relationships and romantic partners. Supermodel Hannah Davis, who is now Jeter’s wife, once discussed how Jeter playing put a strain on their relationship.

Hannah Davis found it hard to cope when Derek Jeter played for the Yankees

The couple started dating in 2012, at a time when the baseball season was still far ahead. Davis had no idea who Jeter was because she didn’t follow baseball. Once the couple started dating, things began to get serious. But the times Jeter played in MLB were the hardest on them. Both of them discussed that situation in The Captain, a detailed docuseries on Jeter’s life that was released in 2022.

“I was very selfish when it came to me and my career. That was number one; that’s not always fair to your significant other,” Jeter commented.

While Davis added, “The hardest time in our relationship was when he played for the Yankees. He was so hyper-focused on baseball, and so he wasn’t really emotionally available to anyone. It’s like, it doesn’t matter if you’ve got a new girlfriend!”
