From beginning to end, any baseball game is a rollercoaster ride. And some of the most important individuals that make any game interesting are the broadcasters. It’s never easy to lose someone, but losing a commentator is sometimes akin to losing a loved one. And Albert Pujols, along with the St. Louis Cardinals, is now mourning the passing of an iconic sportscaster in franchise history.

When watching a baseball game, the hosts add a unique depth to it as they weave a story on the field through their narration. The magic of the moment is forever preserved in the announcer’s voice, leaving lifetime memories imprinted in the minds of spectators. But fans will no longer get to hear Mike Shannon’s voice at Cardinals games.

Recently-retired ballplayer Albert Pujols, who played twice for the Cardinals in his 22-season-long career, is among the team’s best-known faces. He started his major league career with them and ended it in St. Louis, too. Needless to say, the former ballplayer had many interactions with Shannon.

When the news broke out about his passing, Pujols posted a few pictures of the two of them together on Instagram. “So sorry to hear about the passing of Mike Shannon. Mike was a St. Louis legend and he will be dearly missed. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time,” the former DH wrote. A number of other fans later joined him in his sentiments, because the sportscaster truly was that iconic.

Shannon was a true St. Louisan

Mike Shannon was a faithful native of the Missouri city he called home throughout his life. After playing in MLB for the Cardinals from 1962 to 1970, he joined the team in another role – commentator. He was to give more than 50 years of his life to the franchise, becoming a mainstay on fans’ screens.

Shannon contributed much to the team, whether his hand held a microphone or a bat. The Cardinals have won the World Series 11 times in franchise history; the late ballplayer was with them for two of those wins. Later, he became known for his “Get up, baby!” calls whenever his team scored home runs.

“The St. Louis Cardinals were saddened to learn this morning of the passing of Cardinals Hall of Famer and beloved St. Louisan Mike Shannon,” said the team’s owner and CEO, Bill DeWitt Jr.
