If Masataka Yoshida and Rafael Devers’ absence from the field is not enough, the Red Sox are reportedly set to miss Wilyer Abreu’s service in the outfield. The latest update from their manager, Alex Cora, indicates that Abreu is far from ready to play on the opening day. Well, the reliability Abreu offers in the outfield is second to none, and it would be too good to lose for the team.

Abreu has yet to return to baseball activities, but he is working out after missing the first two weeks of spring training due to a gastrointestinal ailment. As a result, he might start the season on the injured list. From the words of Cora, the team seems to be working hard to get Abreu back in action, leaving some questions in line: Why is Abreu so important for the Red Sox? What does it mean for the team if he needs more time to come back? Who can replace him in that case?

Wilyer Abreu brings reliability to the table

Wilyer Abreu’s uniform depicts his hard work on the field; the 2024 NL Gold Glove awardee offers one of the finest fielding performances in the outfield. What comes next is his slugging; Abreu ended 2024 with 15 home runs and 58 RBIs, hence, a complete utility player for the Red Sox. Although Abreu has a strong offensive line, his right field defense has been particularly impressive. It appears that Abreu has superpower with his glove since he frequently comes up with the ball, goes back on it, then extends his arm as though in a desperate attempt to reach for it.

However, his illness and fitness issues are all that are keeping Cora from fielding him. “You can tell he’s not as strong as he was three weeks ago. It’s not only the baseball side of it. He missed a big portion of strength and conditioning–all that stuff. Now we have to ramp up, so we’ll see. We’ll see what happens there. The most important thing here is for him to be healthy,” Cora said during the recent spring season press meet. A fit and healthy Wilyer Abreu is all the team and fans are expecting. Well, it seems like Abreu’s absence will not extend beyond the opening day.

Ways forward for the Red Sox

What if Abreu’s absence extends further? One potential Wilyer Abreu replacement for the Red Sox is Roman Anthony. Throughout 2024, Anthony had a fantastic season, finishing with a .291/.396/.498 slash line, 18 home runs, 65 RBIs, 32 doubles, and 21 stolen bases in 119 games. So, when will Anthony make his major league debut, even though he will be a member of the Red Sox for a long time? Wilyer Abreu’s prolonged absence might open the window of opportunity for him.

At any point of time, Wilyer Abreu at the outfield is the best that the Red Sox can get. He is expected to play in the outfield with Ceddanne Rafaela and Jarren Duran after his return. These three might be baseball’s best outfield ever. Moreover, Abreu will probably have a bigger opportunity this season than he would have otherwise because the Red Sox are eyeing bigger this year. Perhaps he could seize the chance and make the opening day roster if he can ultimately make a comeback sooner.

The Red Sox couldn’t afford a loss of another reliable name in the form of Wilyer Abreu. Considering how the team is desperately working towards making him fit, a sooner-than-expected return is around the corner.
