Derek Jeter Went Against His Father’s Fandom Wishes

Few Yankees legends have as iconic a story with the franchise as Derek Jeter. But in building his path with the team, he betrayed his father’s MLB fandom.

In his book, ‘The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter,’ the author Ian O’Connor mentioned that Jeter’s father was a Tigers fan and did not support the Bombers initially. He was from the South and supported the National League. But despite this, his son went ahead with a Yankees career.

On page 17 of the book, O’Connor wrote, “Derek told anyone who would listen that he would someday play shortstop for the Yankees, the team his father had hated in his youth. Before Charles started rooting for the local Tigers, he was a National League fan from the South who did not celebrate Yankee dominance; the Yanks were among baseball’s last all-white teams before promoting Elston Howard eight years after Jackie Robinson’s debut at Ebbets Field.”
