Derek Jeter has a special relationship with his father. Starting right from his childhood, the bond has spanned decades. Even as a youngster, the baseball legend wanted to play for the New York Yankees. For which, Jeter followed strict rules and a contract for chores and obligations. But by achieving his goal of playing for the Yankees, he defied his father’s MLB fandom. 

Jeter respected his parents, especially his father. The hard-working attitude that his family instilled in him became an integral part of his MLB career. But by playing for the Bronx Bombers, he went against his father, Sanderson Charles Jeter, favorite MLB team.

Derek Jeter Went Against His Father’s Fandom Wishes

Few Yankees legends have as iconic a story with the franchise as Derek Jeter. But in building his path with the team, he betrayed his father’s MLB fandom.

In his book, ‘The Captain: The Journey of Derek Jeter,’ the author Ian O’Connor mentioned that Jeter’s father was a Tigers fan and did not support the Bombers initially. He was from the South and supported the National League. But despite this, his son went ahead with a Yankees career. 

On page 17 of the book, O’Connor wrote, “Derek told anyone who would listen that he would someday play shortstop for the Yankees, the team his father had hated in his youth. Before Charles started rooting for the local Tigers, he was a National League fan from the South who did not celebrate Yankee dominance; the Yanks were among baseball’s last all-white teams before promoting Elston Howard eight years after Jackie Robinson’s debut at Ebbets Field.”

Sanderson Charles Jeter supported his son despite his early dislike for the Yankees. With encouragement, tough love, and some poignant life lessons, Derek made it big. Furthermore, the Yankees icon revealed that anyone can achieve as much success as him through a simple mantra.

Derek Jeter credits his parents for raising him to succeed. They taught him the right attitude and approach to life. Furthermore, he pointed out how his father helped him realize that winning is not easy. These lessons and a strict, close-knit upbringing prepared Derek for his MLB career.

Although the Yankees’ former captain now lauds his parents for helping him in various aspects of his life, many years ago, he defied his father’s MLB fandom.
