Competitiveness is second nature for any athlete. Even retirement from the sport can’t do away with what has been a conditioned response for decades. Derek Jeter is no different. The former New York Yankees captain held himself to a high standard in his twenty seasons in the league. But most importantly, he expected the most out of his teammates too. And that mentality followed him from baseball to golf.

The former shortstop has taken well to the greens after his time on the diamond was up. Although he would never admit that he’s any good, Jeter still regularly takes part in games. An event where he can’t compete but loves to watch others fail is his annual Derek Jeter Celebrity Invitational for the Turn 2 Foundation. Just because he can’t be a true contestant at his own tournament doesn’t mean Jeter takes well to other winners either.

Derek Jeter Was Loathe to Pose With Jimmy Fallon

Derek Jeter and nighttime talk show host Jimmy Fallon go way back, in their words. Fast friends from their younger days, Fallon has appeared in the background of many Yankees games from Captain Clutch’s era. Reminiscing on those times, the duo also went back to a Celebrity Invitational that Fallon won one year. And Derek Jeter hated it.

“I remember you were so mad,” Fallon says in a talk on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in February 2023. “You were smiling because you had to take a photo with the winners. And it’s me and you’re going like, ‘I can’t believe I got to do this’. And I have the photo somewhere.”

Jeter just laughs because a few moments earlier, he had made fun of Fallon’s ability to play golf at all. He had been discussing how winning one’s own game would make people think it’s rigged. But even though the Captain has never won, he admitted that something fishy had gone on one season, just because it was Fallon who won!

Jeter Hilariously Claps Right Back at His Friend

Although the photo does not exist on the internet, it would cause a ruckus among fans if it were ever revealed. In any case, the retired Yankee just says to Fallon’s provocation, “Handicaps play into golf. So the worse you are, it actually helps out your team.”

Although Jeter is poking fun at Fallon’s golfing abilities, both of them are clearly in good spirits, laughing along. Fallon did not make it to this year’s edition of the Invitational but he’s sure to make an appearance in the next few years. Perhaps he might beat the rest once again!
