Out of the many relationships that the MLB legend Derek Jeter had over the years, there is one that his fans might never forget. His relationship with the pop icon Mariah Carey. As a teenager, Jeter used to hang posters of the singer in his room and say that he’d marry her one day. Needless to say, the part of his dream to marry Carey did not come true. But he did get to date her. At the time the former couple dated, the singer was still married to her ex-husband Tommy Mottola. Therefore, setting up a meeting with Jeter, especially for the first time, terrified the singer to her core.

In her memoir, ‘The Meaning of Mariah Carey,’ she has spoken briefly about her intimate affair with the former Yankee. Therein, she also spoke about what went into the covert operation to meet Jeter.

What did Mariah Carey say about planning a meeting with Derek Jeter?

The former couple had met at a dinner party organized by Armani. Derek Jeter was there with one of his fellow teammates. At the same time, Carey was there with her then-husband Tommy Mottola. Their lives changed after that moment. Jeter and Carey had secretly started dating. And the singer was constantly afraid of Mottola finding out. All that ‘covert operation’ was set up to meet Jeter to kick-start their affair in 1997.

She wrote in her biography, “The weeks of covert communication built up to arranging an encounter. I was still painfully aware that I was married, and I didn’t plan to break any of my vows.”

The couple had planned to meet at a low-key pizza spot near the former shortstop’s apartment and to sneak out to his place soon after. Despite the fear of taking the risk, the singer knew that she had to meet him, and so she did.

Did Jeter save Carey from Mottola?

One of the many things that the singer mentioned in her autobiography was that the former shortstop made her realize that she needed to get out of her relationship. She was in an abusive marriage, and Jeter made her realize that she deserved so much more in life.
