The New York Yankees may not be enjoying a great season in 2023, but they still need to take inspiration from the titans of the past. The Yankees hosted ‘Old-Timers’ Day to inspire the Pinstripes, hoping to make a late run to secure postseason contention. But the day had some unexpected pictures, much to the entertainment of fans.

The Yankees hosted former players from the 1998 World Series winning roster for a chat, skipping the tradition of having them play a game for the second year running. But the fans were entertained by the coming together of Yankees generations and the miscued attempts at featuring a player from the current roster.

New York Yankees’ Cy Young Contender Seeks to Feature with Legends

The New York Yankees have been largely turning in disappointing performances in 2023. However, a few players have stood out from the rest of the pack. While the batting lineup on several occasions has failed, throughout the first half of the season, it was the Yankees defense that was pulling through for them.

With their featured ace Gerrit Cole hitting from to remain in Cy Young contention for the season, the Bronx rang true when Cole took the mound. However, in a late season gaffe, the star appears to have endeared himself to fans by photobombing a picture with the featured legends on Old-Timers day.

Former MLB Stars Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte took center stage during the pregame ceremony, and were later joined by other members of the roster. The fun of it was when Cole was leaning into the dugout to catch a glimpse.

Fans React to Cole’s Lean

Gerrit Cole may not have meant to go viral for his off field antics, but the internet has a mind of its own. The picture features Cole leaning in from just beyond the dugout as players from the 1998 roster pose in the Yankees dugout on hallowed grounds.

However, fans were quick to mark out that Cole’s intentions were likely good and the jibes were more playful than anything else.

Some fans seemed to believe that Cole had simply slipped into some creative visualization. Imagining himself on a roster that sported stars of that level was certainly a fantasy only a few players could have stayed away from.

Meanwhile some fans were just happy that Cole could finally have his day out and just be his natural self.

The Yankees may not sport the same sort of team in 2023, but all they are lacking is World Series Ring. The star power, capability and sheer flair of this Yankees squad is not to be underestimated, but the performances must also bear themself out in the moment.
