Sometimes, legends also fell short of reaching targets. Especially when it is the Hall of Famer election. While multiple MLB legends failed to achieve the most incredible honor, Derek Jeter‘s story is slightly different. He is a Hall of Famer for sure, but still, a narrow failure annoys him throughout these years. Captain Clutch failed to join the historic HoF record. Despite the player’s 2020 Hall of Fame moment being a golden achievement, he still has to confront why he didn’t receive all the votes to be named with his former teammate. However, during a recent interview, the legend opened up and stated his views clearly.

Jeter appeared on a Flippin Bats podcast episode with Ben Verlander. The podcast revolved around several topics, but it eventually landed on Jeter’s missing the chance to be a unanimous HoF. The MLB icon didn’t think twice to share his answer with the host and his fans.

Jeter is not a camera-friendly person. He neither comes to his social media nor sits for frequent interviews. However, during his podcast with Verlander, he shared opinions on different issues, ranging from baseball analytics to Roger Clemens’ pre-game habit. When the discussion arrived at his HoF election, the host asked his views on what he did wrong for not being elected as a unanimous Hall of Famer. The legend stated that though the media wants the athletes to be accountable, his views differ.

Notably, Jeter missed the chance with only one vote. While getting 397 votes would have made him an undivided HoF, he received 396 votes. About that issue, the legend said, “I never thought or never would sit here and say everyone should vote for me.” He takes Babe Ruth and Honk Aaron as examples and states, “Not everyone voted for Hank Aaron or Babe Ruth, so I would never say that about myself.

However, going forward, the former Yankees captain expressed his annoyance, stating, “I get tired of answering the question, when that question should be answered by the particular person who did not vote for me, and that’s how I look at it. But once again, to make sure everyone understands, I’m not saying that everyone should have voted for me. But they should ask him or her to answer that question. I shouldn’t have to answer.”

To date, only one player has achieved the undivided vote to be in the HoF.

The Sadman’s HoF record is still untouched

Many players register themselves as Hall of Famers, but until now, only one got all 425 votes to be elected. Since the Hall of Fame started, only Mariano Rivera got the honor of having a unanimous HoF election. This Panamian baseball player used to be a teammate of Jeter. He also had 5 World Series. However, he beat the former captain in HoF with 1 vote.

Though getting 396 votes officially can’t make Jeter a congruent Hall of Famer, for fans, he is no less than Rivera. They don’t consider the 1 vote lack.
