Sports commentator Joe Buck once detailed his first meeting with retired baseball legend Barry Bonds. Buck was speaking as a guest on the ‘In Depth With Graham Bensinger’ show. Moreover, Buck didn’t have good memories to share from the meet. In fact, Buck didn’t have much to share at all. 

Joe Buck is a well-known figure in the American sports community, popular for his broadcasting role in MLB and NFL games. On the other hand, Graham Bensinger is a journalist, who gained prominence hosting his ‘In Depth’ talk show, interviewing famous personalities from the sporting world.

Whereas the legendary Barry Bonds needs no formal introduction to baseball lovers. A hard hitter and prolific home run scorer, Bonds played for the Pittsburgh Pirates and later for the San Francisco Giants until retirement in 2007.

Retired with the reputation of a ‘Home Run King’, Barry Bonds was a controversial & temperamental figure. Bonds was a 14-time All-Star player. Such a high-status profile notwithstanding, Joe Buck, in his own words, didn’t enjoy meeting up with Bonds. An incident that Buck later discussed in an interview on Graham Bensinger’s talk show. 

Barry Bonds: A talented controversial character 

Opinions may vary amongst the public, but none can deny Barry Bonds’ gifted playing skills. The batting records which Bonds stacked up during his playing tenure were superhuman in nature. At the end of his career, Bonds had a massive total of 762 home runs to his credit. Scoring 73 of those home runs in the 2001 season alone.

When broadcaster Joe Buck first met Bonds during a practice session, Bonds was impolite towards Buck. It was former baseball player Don Baylor, who tried to introduce Buck to Bonds. But Bonds seemed to care not the least. 

Disclosing the incident on the Graham Bensinger talk show, Buck said, “It was a long time ago, early in my career and I was in the dugout with Don Baylor. He said, you know it’s such a shame that Barry seems like he just doesn’t have any fun playing the game. He’s ready to yell at somebody or bite somebody’s head off if they ask the wrong questions.”

Buck further added, “Don Baylor goes, Barry, this is one of our radio announcers, Joe Buck. You know Jack Buck, this is his kid. And Barry’s like, so? It’s like, okay, I had my hand out and that was it. And so I just walked back with my tail between my legs and looked at Don like you’re right. Yeah, great guy.” 

Barry Bonds: And the controversies continue 

The legitimacy of Barry Bonds’ home runs came into dispute after being busted for using steroids during his playing career. Bonds was indicted by the Federal Grand Jury in 2007. The scandal placed Bonds’ entire list of achievements in a ring of doubt. A big reason why there is still a heated debate over Bonds’ non-inclusion in the MLB Hall Of Fame.
