MLB icon Derek Jeter is a member of the 3000 hit club and is considered a true legend of the sport today. A beloved player, he’s simply known as the Captain to New York Yankees fans. But even though he hit a number of long balls while he played, the true home run he hit was perhaps where he chose his family.

Jeter has always been rather tight-lipped about his personal life – when he played, he only wanted to play. But after he retired in 2014, the Hall of Famer’s focus shifted from baseball to family. He met supermodel Hannah Davis in 2012 and the two hit it off immediately. The couple has been married since 2016 and today, they’re raising three daughters together. But how did the two meet?

Derek Jeter randomly met his future wife at a restaurant

In 2022, ESPN released docuseries on the retired shortstop, aptly named The Captain. It gave details on the former Yankee’s career as well as his private life. In addition to discussions with Jeter himself, various reporters, teammates, as well as other people from his life, gave some background. One of them was, of course, his wife.

Detailing the night the couple met for the first time, Hannah said, “The night we met, I was actually with my mom. I decided to take her out to dinner with one of my best friends, Maxwell…There was a connection from the very beginning. Even though he was mostly talking to my mom, there was that connection. And I felt like he’s so mysterious, I want to know more.”

They were attending an event at the restaurant and Jeter happened to be sitting next to Hannah’s mom. And since she was out with a friend, Hannah made sure to let Derek know whether she was dating him.

Hannah went to great lengths to tell the MLB legend about her relationship status

Since she was out with a male friend, it would be natural for anyone to assume they were together. Derek Jeter thought so too, as he said in the docuseries. But Hannah wanted to make sure he knew that she was single and took help from her mom.

Taking her to the bathroom to speak in private, the mother-daughter duo came up with a plan. “She mentioned stuff like, ‘Oh Hannah, how difficult is it being single in New York?’ and all this other stuff,” Jeter laughingly said.
