“I Wanted Everything So Fast…”- Years After Retirement, Derek Jeter’s Former Teammate CC Sabathia Reveals What He Would Advise His Younger Self

In his 20-season career with the New York Yankees, Derek Jeter made many lifelong friends. Playing ball together with such high stakes has a way of bringing people together. One such pal he regularly keeps up with is former pitcher CC Sabathia. The two played in pinstripes from 2009 to 2014, the year Jeter retired, although Sabathia went on to play till 2019. The duo still maintain their brotherly relationship; in fact, Sabathia is a regular at the Turn 2 Foundation’s annual Celebrity Invitational Golf Tournament.

Sabathia is once again reprising his role as an amateur golfer at the Baha Mar Resort this year. The whole weekend is full of festivities that viewers can follow on social media. And in a behind-the-scenes video, the retired player gave some valuable advice that a lot of athletes could benefit from.

In a series of interviews posted by the Turn 2 Foundation on their Instagram stories, many celebrities present at the game gave some advice to their younger selves. One of them was CC Sabathia, who had some pearls of wisdom to offer.

“The biggest piece of advice I would give my younger self is to be patient. I think I wanted everything so fast when I was younger,” the former Yankee, presumable after he finished playing as he held a golf club. “You know, wanted to be the ace of the team, take care of my family, all these different things. But that comes with time and maturity, so I would tell myself to be patient.”

It’s something that many of us experience, wanting to climb up the ladder as fast as possible. But as they say, all good things take time. Sabathia understands that well enough now, even if his younger self didn’t.

Being notorious for his privacy, Jeter didn’t make social media accounts until a few months after he retired. But once he did, the former captain upped his game by not only giving peeks into his personal life but engaging with others as well. One of those interactions was with Sabathia on his 42nd birthday.

Jeter is a few years older than the former pitcher and yet, when he wished him on his birthday he wrote, “Happy 50th bday my brother! CC Sabathia.” His friend had an equally cheeky response, “I’m not 50 cuz…FOH.” He later added, “Thank you my brother Derek Jeter! I’m bout to come over there and delete your account. Now go back to watching your doc (it’s fire btw).”
