MLB icon and the New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter was probably the best thing to the game of baseball. While playing for a single franchise throughout his career, Jeter achieved the pinnacle in the game. But being Derek Jeter has never been an easy job.

Long before Jeter became a Yankees legend, the former shortstop had his struggle while making it big in MLB. And knowing that Jeter, who belonged to a small town like Kalamazoo, also struggled off-the-field. In Jeter’s own words, at times, he felt over-matched while playing for the Pinstripes.

One thing that stands out about Derek Jeter is that he never ran away from accepting his failures. And that was the main reason the entire MLB fanbase adored him.

Recently, the former Yankees captain appeared on the Drink Champs podcast, where he discussed various aspects of his personal and professional life. While doing so, Jeter also went down memory lane; and opened up about his struggle to come from a small town like Kalamazoo.

The Yankees legend admitted of him being over-matched compared to the world-class players he played against during his early days in the Bronx.

“I am coming from Kalamazoo, Michigan. No disrespect to Kalamazoo, just a small town, not known for professional baseball players.”

“Now you go from playing in Kalamazoo to playing against the best players in the world. And I was completely over-matched. I mean that’s when you got to bounce back man, you got to learn from failures… You got to try to look at the bright side,” Derek Jeter said.

Have the Yankees given up on hunting for Jeter’s replacement?

Given his unique traits, Derek Jeter was a once-in-a-lifetime ballplayer. Apart from being an exceptional shortstop, the Pinstripes royalty also made an excellent leader. Under his leadership, the Yankees won five championships between 1996 and 2009.

And ever since Jeter retired from the game in 2014, the Yankees have not found someone as good as Jeter. Even they are yet to name someone captain after Jeter bid farewell to the game in 2014.
