Looking at some of the most iconic couples in the past, Mariah Carey and Derek Jeter cannot be overlooked. Though the two didn’t date for very long, the late 90s tabloids were abuzz with news about the couple. And why wouldn’t they be? Carey was on her way to becoming a musical sensation, known not just in America but all over the world. And Jeter was, of course, in his prime days with the New York Yankees.

Both of them were already big names in their individual fields and widely covered by the press. So when news broke of them being together, the fans went wild. And while Jeter was already popular for staying out of the spotlight if it didn’t have to do with baseball, Carey had no such qualms. And yet, in a 1998 interview, she shied away from talking about her rumored partner.

Mariah Carey talked about Derek Jeter in an uncomfortable Howard Stern interview

The popular radio personality Howard Stern is widely known as a radio and television personality, especially famous for The Howard Stern Show. Famous, or rather infamous, for his rather sexist and misogynistic comments, he interviewed Carey in a similar way in a 1998 interview. When asked about her relationship with the former Yankees slugger, she was understandably cryptic with her answers.

Stern directly asked Carey if she was in love with Jeter. She responded, “If I was in love, okay, would I discuss that on national television? That’s not me, I’m not that girl.” While the hosts continued to pry information out of the songbird, she kept mum about it.

Carey went on to say that Stern ruined her chances of being loved anyway

When Sterne repeatedly asked Carey about her thoughts on Jeter, she tried to steer the conversation to a new topic. Sterne was all too ready to oblige and started talking about her fashion choices. Carey was known to be the archetypal “good girl” at the beginning of her career. Though she later stated that she was not entirely comfortable with that image.

“You dress like a stripper,” Sterne told Carey, to which she was understandably horrified but kept her cool. Trying to make a joke out of it, she replied, “If I had any chance with anybody that you’re talking about, it’s over now.”
