The Houston Astros had one of the most difficult nights of the season against the Chicago White Sox in Game 1 of the Wild Card series. Although the Astros were able to score 3 runs in the game, they never looked dangerous. The lack of effort angered fans, who didn’t hold back, and Sousa wasn’t happy about it.

During his pregame interview in the Astros dugout, Bennett Sousa said, “I’m sorry for the comments I made about our fanbase… I personally was emotional after an emotional game and was emotional in the wrong way.”
After trailing 5-0, the Astros clawed back in the fifth. But when Sousa took the mound in the seventh, he unraveled.
He allowed another run, losing command of his breaking ball. The boos followed Sousa back to the dugout, and his frustration became impossible to hide.
“I’m not going to lie to you, I was pretty pissed off in the dugout when I came in, about the boos,” Sousa said.
Sousa then explained, “This team has laid a lot on the line to be in this position to give the fans a playoff game — a playoff series. We want their support.”
Sousa’s comments were critical but measured, reflecting frustration rather than anger after the Game 1 loss:
“The fans here are definitely spoiled with a lot of ALCS and World Series runs.”
According to Sousa, the Astros making the postseason 9 out of the last 10 seasons, including a World Series in 2022, has made the fans set the bar too high. Having reached the American League Championship Series (ALCS) seven consecutive times from 2017 to 2023 and capturing multiple World Series titles, the fan base grew accustomed to deep October runs.
The team had previously rebounded from slow starts or mid-season deficits, leading fans to believe the veteran core could simply “turn a switch” once the postseason arrived.
Sousa apologized before Wednesday’s game, admitting his emotions got the best of him and that he shouldn’t have lashed out. He also made it clear that he needed to look at himself before worrying about the crowd’s reaction.
What made Sousa so emotional was how badly the night had gone before those boos.
The White Sox had 11 hits while the Astros managed only 6, with several runs coming after walks and other mistakes. The Astros eventually lost 6-3, leaving them one defeat away from ending their season.
But Sousa was not the only Astros player frustrated by the crowd’s reaction.
Christian Walker also questioned the boos after Houston struggled in front of 34,011 fans in a 40,963-seat stadium.
“We’re here, playing at home; we need cheers. We need energy. We don’t need boos. What purpose does that serve in that moment? Whatever fans are feeling, we’re feeling it tenfold. We’re the ones out there. We’re the ones in the fight.”
The Astros entered October at 81-81, so the frustration isn’t just about how the team played in Game 1 of the Wild Card.
This isn’t the first time fans have shown their dissatisfaction with the team.
During the 2021 season, Jose Altuve was struggling a bit against their rivals, the New York Yankees. And the Astros fans were not happy with their best star not stepping up for the team.
After finishing with just 3 hits in 13 at-bats in that Yankees series, the fans booed him. Even after he hit a 3-run homer in the 3rd game, the fans booed him while he rounded the bases.
The only way fans got behind Altuve was with how he performed after that Yankees series. Altuve hit .282 with 29 homers and led them to the World Series, where they lost to the Braves.
Now again, the mood can change quickly for the Astros if they can get a win in Game 2 of the Wild Card series and push the White Sox into a do-or-die game.
