Derek Jeter has a special place in MLB fans’ hearts. That much more if you are a fan of the Bronx Bombers. And while the shortstop is already iconic with his #2 jersey in Yankee Stadium, younger fans will be treated to a fresh look at him through ESPN’s documentary ‘The Captain’. Although reclusive through much of his career, the seven-part series will take audiences on a journey through Derek Jeter’s playing days. And its release was a star-studded affair at the Tribeca Film Festival on Monday.

Derek Jeter has always been an iconic presence for the New York Yankees. So much so that the Yankees have even retired the #2 jersey from the Yankees’ dressing room. It now sits in the hallowed company of other greats. Jeter’s laurels in the Bronx are hardly in short supply. With fourteen All-Star appearances to his name, the shortstop is clearly a solid individual performer. Add to that his resume, also featuring five World Series Champion trophies, and you get the complete package. Fans will undoubtedly be excited to get to know the real Jeter more.

‘The Captain’ featuring Derek Jeter premieres

The Tribeca Film Festival saw Derek Jeter take the red carpet with several celebrities to mark the premiere of his documentary. Hollywood star Spike Lee and co-producer Michael Tollin are heading the project. And as the producers made their way to the premiere, so did many familiar faces. Former players and well-wishers of Jeter all alike were snapped on their way to their seats. Some recognizable attendees included CC Sabathia, Joe Torre, and Harold Reynolds.

Director Randy Wilkins has set out to make Jeter into more than just a baseball player by virtue of this documentary. Said Wilkins, “I set out with this thesis statement that Derek is not just a great baseball player, but an American icon.

Derek Jeter’s own opinion

Propelled by powerful unseen footage and candid interviews, the documentary is a product of tremendous effort. And a superior product will definitely find its way into the hearts of baseball fans around the globe. Jeter turned a corner on media interaction only after his retirement. Especially then, fans will be eager to look back on his career. And Jeter seems to be just as excited, if not more.

“It was interesting to look back and reflect on my career,” said Jeter, “which I didn’t allow myself to do during my career.
