As much as players in Major League Baseball are garnering the limelight, minor leaguers are also stealing their share of the limelight. Anthony Volpe, the 21-year-old baseball prodigy, is causing quite a stir. Volpe has been making quite the waves in the world of baseball ever since he was in high school and now he is just one step below the big stages before he slides onto the stage right under the spotlight.

The young phenom is the New York Yankees’ number-one prospect, but that’s not all, Volpe has been drawing comparisons to one of the most iconic captains in the history of the Yankees, a player who’s led the team to countless World Series titles. So, what does the athlete have to say about all the attention he’s getting?

When it comes to baseball, there are few names as iconic as Derek Jeter’s. So, when Anthony Volpe was compared to the legendary captain, it’s safe to say as a lifelong fan of Jeter, Volpe knows the kind of legacy the captain left behind, and he humbly understands that being compared to him is no small feat.

In his own words, It’s humbling to hear, I grew up a huge fan of Jeter & I think there’s never going to be another player or person like him in NY or anywhere. It’s obviously very humbling, but it’s over-exaggerated, I think!”

He must be doing something right to be compared to the legendary captain. And he certainly is – Volpe is putting in the work to make his dream of becoming a shortstop akin to Jeter true.

While most players took some time off after the last season ended, Volpe showed up at the team’s development complex for workouts in December. His passion for the game is clear, and he’s ready to do whatever it takes to earn a spot as a shortstop in the Yankees’ lineup this spring. 

Who else wants the coveted opening for a shortstop at the New York Yankees? 

Anthony Volpe is on top of his game and he does have the edge to land the job. Of course, there’s no guarantee that Volpe will make it to the big leagues just yet, but the signs are certainly pointing in that direction.

According to the NY Post, he’s up against some tough competition, including seasoned veterans, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, Oswald Peraza, and rookie Oswaldo Cabrera. However, his impressive stats in the minor leagues have put him in a league of his own. In fact, he’s already emerging as a frontrunner for the position. Will he land the shortstop job?
