It seemed like a nightmare on repeat. A string of defensive horror gave way to misery. The Yankees held a one-run lead in the seventh inning against the Phillies on Friday. Paul Goldschmidt, a four-time Gold Glove winner, fielded an ordinary grounder and then, instead of taking the sure out, he made a desperate throw to home plate. The ball sailed high, the tying run scored, and a blowout loss soon followed. But Goldy owned his mistake. He described it as “too aggressive of a play.” That, however, was only the opening act.

Skip ahead less than 24 hours to Saturday afternoon. The same two teams met, and the Phillies were routing the Yankees in the seventh inning. The score was a lopsided 7-1 against the Bombers and on the mound was reliever Allan Winans, trying to stop the bleeding. With two outs, Trea Turner hit a grounder to second. It was a double-play grounder right at Jazz Chisholm Jr that should have ended the inning.

But guess what? Rather than making a clean getaway, Chisholm simply booted the routine grounder. What should have been the third out turned into a disaster. The Phillies had runners on first and second in addition. And, Philadelphia wasted little time making the Pinstripes pay for that. Then the next hitter, Kyle Schwarber, smacked a hard two-run double. The already ugly scoreboard flipped to a humiliating 9-1. It was a perfect snapshot of a team in a total freefall, discovering ways to lose.

Chisholm’s miscue was his 12th of the season. Even more alarmingly, it was the tenth error the team had made in only five games. This stretch of sloppy play has defined their summer slide into mediocrity. For Chisholm, the error contrasts sharply with his All-Star level offense. While he has hit 18 homers, he hasn’t been consistent with the glove.

For fans, these are the plays that turn frustration into fury.

Yankees fanbase at its breaking point

“Want to reiterate that DJ had ZERO errors on the season and was hitting .266. Yet the geniuses from talking Yanks and @ChrisKirschner were begging for him to get DFAd. Great call guys,” a fan wrote. Well, after DJ LeMahieu’s exit, the team’s defense has completely cratered.  The fans’ frustration is not just about losing games; it’s about how the team is losing them. “Genuinely never seen a Yankee team this bad,” wrote another fan.

While there have been Yankees teams with worse records in the past, this team is losing in a profoundly “un-Yankee-like” way. On top of that, captain Aaron Judge is now headed to the Injured List. This double-whammy pushed fans from frustration into a state of pure hopelessness. Some of them are ready to pack it in for the year. “Send Judge to Mr Tommy John now, become a seller and get ready for the 2026 season with some prospects. Season is over,” read a comment.

After a scorching 35-20 start, the Yankees have collapsed, going 21-28 and falling a season-high 5.5 games out of first place. Losing their most important player for 10 days now feels like the final nail in the coffin.

Of course, fans also aimed their anger directly at Chisholm. ““Me and Volpe could be the best defensive duo in the league” meanwhile bro can’t even control the ball to get the out at 1st🤣💀😭,” a fan chimed in, recalling Chisholm’s old statement.

“I think we could be the best shortstop-second baseman in the league, definitely defensively. And I think we are probably going to turn the most double plays in the league, too. That would be my prediction for us,” Chisholm had said back in February, speaking about his partnership with Anthony Volpe, who is also currently struggling with his form.

Fans have now grown tired of the same old speeches from the team’s leadership as well. “Cant wait for Aaron Boone to get mad again about people questioning the defense on this team,” one more X user commented.

Despite the team making plenty of errors, Aaron Boone has insisted they are a very good defensive unit, which hasn’t left the fans amused.
