At least in the ballpark, 2008 was a forgettable season for the Miami Marlins, or maybe it wasn’t. While the Miami Marlins’ season concluded without a postseason seat, at number three in the NL East, the first half of the season featured Jennifer Aniston running across the stadium with a canine as the Marlins took on San Diego Padres at home.

As reported by MLB news in a piece from February 2021, the Miami Marlins hosted Marley, a Hollywood canine dog – a yellow Labrador retriever on May 2, 2008, at Dolphin Stadium. Senior Vice President of Marlins’ marketing and events, Sean Flynn reached out to director David Frankel to integrate the Marlins “Bark at the Park” event into the film.

“Marley and Me,” was a film that featured Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson; adapted from the ’05 autobiographical book by John Grogan that revolved around the couple adopting a dog to examine their preparations before starting a family.

After gaining the MLB’s approval, the film’s logistic team and the stadium’s operations division planned a seamless, deliberate interference. A 120 seconds innings break was planned and Marley was supposed to run across the left field. And reach the corner gate adjacent to the wall, with Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson running parallel to Marley. While the entire sequence was risky; it reached fruition when the film ultimately got released.

After releasing in December 2008, the film broke a record for the largest ticket sales and Box Office Collections on Christmas Day. All in all, from the MLB to the franchise and the movie, everyone benefited from this short stint at Dolphin Stadium.

The biggest Marlins update from 2022 was Derek Jeter stepping down as their CEO. On the other hand, their season in the ballpark was forgettable, to say the least. And their 18-year-long absence from the postseason only continued after they placed fourth in the National League East Division.
