Alex Rodriguez achieved some great things during his illustrious MLB career. But the New York Yankees legend also found himself in his fair share of trouble. This was due to his antics early on in his career and conflicts that arose as well. He has even faced criticism from teammates and the coaching staff. In 2009, a former Yankees skipper noted a trait of A-Rod’s that changed the club.
Although he eventually won a World Series with the Yanks, there was controversy during Rodriguez’s time with the Yankees. The former Bronx Bombers skipper Joe Torre was candid in stating that A-Rod brought about a change with a particular trait.

Former Yankees skipper Joe Torre once called Alex Rodriguez an attention-seeker
Before the 2004 season, Alex Rodriguez was sent to the Yankees via a trade that partnered him with Derek Jeter. It was a massive deal. But at the time, there were concerns regarding his character and performance in the postseason in recent years. Furthermore, former Yankees manager Joe Torre once revealed that A-Rod’s attention-seeking trait changed the club. It created a strained atmosphere among the players. The New York Times published an article in 2009, quoting Torre’s honest thoughts on the trade.
According to the New York Times, Torre said, “Alex monopolized all the attention.” He further elaborated saying “We never really had anybody who craved the attention. I think when Alex came over he certainly changed just the feel of the club.” These are candid thoughts about one of baseball’s greatest players.

But during his time with the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers, A-Rod had gained a reputation for being a selfish player. Coaches and players around the league did not feel he had what it takes to compete seriously. Furthermore, there was also the issue of Rodriguez’s strained relationship with Derek Jeter.
A-Rod and Jeter were far from friends
In 2004, when Alex Rodriguez was traded to the Yankees, he and Derek Jeter had a strained relationship. It started with A-Rod’s controversial comments about Jeter after signing his record-breaking deal with the Rangers. After the trade, media speculation about their relationship went on for years. A-Rod even tried to cut a deal with reporters to stop the questions about his friendship with the legendary shortstop.
