Derek Jeter was rarely a part of disappointing teams during his career. The New York Yankees legend always did his utmost to play his best baseball and win. But no matter how hard you play, defeat and disappointment are inevitable. Something similar happened in 2006 World Series. A former Yankees teammate recently shared an iconic moment from an underwhelming Team USA run of the same year.

Jeter and Alex Rodriguez have been in several iconic moments together, including the 2009 World Series victory. Continuing the trend post-retirement, the two are working as MLB analysts. But this 2006 run is something that they likely want to forget.

Johnny Damon shares a snap alongside Derek Jeter and A-Rod

The 2006 World Series was a disappointing run for a stacked Team USA. Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez were just two of the many legendary names on that team. But the USA lost in the second round, not even making the Top 4. Most recently, former 2-time All-Star Johnny Damon shared an iconic picture from that tournament on Instagram. He, Jeter, and A-Rod are all in the frame alongside legend Ken Griffey Jr. Damon shared this seemingly as a way to celebrate the 4th of July, Independence Day.

In the caption, he said, “Red, White, and Blue”, while also including “#mondaymotivation #usa #baseball”. This was a big moment for Damon as he represented his home nation. But the team was largely disappointing and lost in the second round.

Jeter and Griffey Jr. made the All-World Classic Team, but that would have been little consolation. The Yankees’ former captain would participate in 2009 with Team USA again falling short. But 2006 was an especially disappointing run for Team USA given their talented roster.

Jeter, A-Rod, and Team USA fell short in 2006

2006 was the inaugural World Baseball Classic. Team USA was seen as one of the favorites given their loaded roster, including Derek Jeter, Chipper Jones, Alex Rodriguez, Ken Griffey Jr., Johnny Damon, and others. They got past the first round successfully before being knocked out in the second round.

Jeter performed well and was selected for the All-World Classic team. But Rodriguez’s performances could have been more memorable. What made it even more impactful is that neither A-Rod nor Jeter could win silverware for their nation. However, the two retired as baseball legends, and the USA eventually won the WBC in 2017.
