“Just Say You Don’t Want Me and Be Done With It”- Revisiting Barry Bonds’ Controversial Ode to MLB That He Labeled as a ‘Death Sentence’

Barry Bonds is one of the most entertaining players to have ever played baseball. His dominant batting and sharp defense made him a force to reckon with. Yet Bonds is still not inducted into the MLB Hall of Fame. 

A successful and equally controversial player, Barry Bonds is a famous, or rather infamous, figure in the sport of baseball. He played MLB for the Pittsburgh Pirates and San Francisco Giants, respectively. Bonds retired in 2007 with 762 career total home runs in his account.

Earning the status of a ‘Home Run King’, Bonds was a champion in his playing days. Match-winner and a champion of the sport in his own right. But Bonds’ drug abuse scandal placed doubt over his Hall Of Fame inclusion. The debate still rages on.

During his playing tenure, Barry Bonds did everything in his zone to achieve the ranks of a legend. Bonds hit a record 73 home runs in the 2001 MLB season. He is also a 14-time All-Star player.

Bonds’ legacy got stained as soon as he admitted to taking drugs during his playing career after investigations. He got indicted by a federal grand jury in 2007. Bonds was charged for taking performance enhancement drugs. 

Nonetheless, there are still many who think that Bonds deserves the Hall Of Fame honor. One of those people is Bonds himself. But after repeated snubbings, Bonds has admitted to being disheartened.

According to a source, in an interview with The Athletic, Bonds spoke about his MLB Hall Of Fame exclusion saying, “A death sentence. That’s what they’ve given me. My heart, it’s broken, really broken. If they don’t want me, just say you don’t want me and be done with it. Just be done with it.” 

What are the chances? 

Barry Bonds’ vote count in the Hall Of Fame election read as low as 34.7% in 2014. While the votes did rise up to 60.7% in 2020, he is still short of the 75% criteria requirement for induction. With the debate further heating up year after year, the outcome will surely gain a lot of attention.
