Moving from the Detroit Tigers to the Houston Astros sure wasn’t easy for Verlander, and his decision-making was plenty fraught even just before the move.

While a superb performer for Detroit, Verlander could not gather any jewelry while with the Tigers. Post-season success remained elusive for the star pitcher. However, with a change in scenery, Verlander landed the pennant in his first season at the Minute Maid. And the story of how he got there is perhaps just as interesting.

Candidly, Verlander mentioned that his approach to the subject was straightforward. Said Verlander, “It comes down to a singular moment.”

In an apartment at the time, the superstar pitcher was with his wife when he made the switch. Setting the situation up, Verlander describes the surrounding situation. “It was just her and I. I’d kind of get all the information. It’s, I don’t know, 11:55 now, “ he added, “and I’m kinda pacing in our apartment and I’m going ‘Trust your instincts, trust your instincts.”

And in a moment of truly not knowing what his best alternative was, he turned to his wife. Says Verlander, “I look at Kate and I go, ‘I don’t know what my instincts are telling me!”

The superstar pitcher found his feet soon enough and dropped the ax. Describing a final bit of clarity that he got after making a few more rounds of the apartment, Verlander had his moment of clarity. “And then finally, just a little more pacing and I go finally ‘Screw it, I’m going to Houston!”

Although far from it herself, Upton made sure to echo her partner’s sentiments. And Verlander was all praise as he described his partner’s reaction. “And she was like ‘Heck yeah we are!”, he adds, “and that was it. Decision made. So we called their GM, said we’ll accept it.”
