The Houston Astros have been dominant these last few years. Making another postseason trip in 2023, the reigning World Series champs are looking to defend their title. The club’s journey started yesterday with a game against the Minnesota Twins, which they won 6-4. It was largely thanks to Justin Verlander, who continues to reverse the clock.

In his age-40 season, many thought the ace’s time in the league was done. With the New York Mets earlier this year, Verlander was not at his best. But after being traded back to H-Town, the pitcher is back in prime postseason form. Of course, cheering him on from the sidelines yesterday was his family, with whom he shared a sweet moment.

Verlander and supermodel Kate Upton made waves when they first announced they were together. Although the relationship went through a ride, they have proven that love conquers all. Parents to Genevieve Verlander, the family is going as strong as ever. Upton and Genevieve made an appearance at the ALDS game yesterday, whom Verlander made sure to acknowledge from the dugout.

Speaking to reporters about them later on, the Astros pitcher said, “It’s always a pleasure to be able to look up and see my family, especially my daughter. We have a day game, so she’s able to come. You know, see her up there and be able to smile and say I love you. Just, it’s what it’s all about.”

It was a truly magical night for Houston and the Verlander family. Had the ace stayed in New York, he would have been under fire for not making it to October with the rest of the Mets, the highest-paid team in 2023. But last night, Verlander was right where he has always been – helping the Astros win from the mound.

With the 3x Cy Young winner Verlander leading the charge defensively, Yordan Alvarez and Jose Altuve were stars on the home plate. Although it took a few innings to get into shape, Verlander pitched six scoreless innings across 93 pitches, striking out six Twins. The 6-4 victory was the 17th postseason win of the pitcher’s career, establishing his reputation further.

Alvarez’s two-run blast and then a home run to top it off earned loud cheers from the crowds. Altuve wasn’t to be left behind, and the Dusty Baker-led team clinched its first victory of the postseason.
