“The Sandy Alcantara market is picking up drastically and now looks like there is a real chance he gets traded by Thursday,” wrote analyst Jim Bowden in a recent tweet. Despite the player’s recent remarks highlighting his desire to stay with the Miami Marlins, his trade seems inevitable now. Amongst the most prominent franchises speculated to take home the pitcher are the Red Sox. Reports reveal that the team contacted the Marlins a few weeks ago to discuss Alcantara. This means that they were already informed of the steep price at which they can only get the player.
According to a recent tweet by Boston Strong, the Marlins are asking for “two elite prospects plus” for teams who wish to acquire either Sandy Alcantara or fellow pitcher Edward Cabrera. With both being two of the better controllable starters available to the team, the Marlins won’t let either of them get away if they can’t get a few star prospects that could be molded into future faces of the franchise.
This major demand may have reduced the Red Sox’s appetite for Alcantara. After all, according to a recent report by Mass Live, there has been little contact between the Marlins and the Boston-based franchise in the last few days.

Alcantara, without a doubt, is an exceptional player. His 8.0 bWAR back in 2022 allowed him to lead the National League and earn him the 2022 NL Cy Young Award. However, his performance has seen a dip throughout the ongoing MLB season. He has been struggling since his return from his Tommy John surgery, with his ERA going even above 7.00 at one point in time. Besides Antonio Senzatela, he currently possesses the worst ERA (6.66 to 6.68) for pitchers with over 100.0 innings pitched. When away from home, he has averaged 1-5 over 36.2 innings with 52 hits, 19 walks, and 31 strikeouts. Therefore, acquiring him at this point would be a risk for the Red Sox. Especially if they have to give up two elite prospects plus for him.
Fortunately, the Red Sox’s loss of interest in the 29-year-old pitcher does not mean that he is completely out of options. Even with just a few hours remaining before the trade deadline, reports have already linked Alcantara to another prominent franchise. A franchise with whom Alcantara can not only grow, but also have a chance at winning the World Series title, too.

Will Sandy Alcantara be traded to the Dodgers?
The Marlins are doing well for themselves in the ongoing MLB season, having gone on a recent 6-4 run to extend their win record to 51-55. The Los Angeles Dodgers are doing better, having won 63 of their 108 games. The team is already making good use of their starting players, thanks to which players like Dustin May and Estuery Ruiz are hardly getting any play time. Therefore, with May and Ruiz not being used to their full potential, and given the Marlins’ reported demands, a partnership between the Dodgers and Marlins can connect with two magnets!
Los Angeles’s starting pitching is quite strong, and so is their rotation. Shohei Ohtani, as a one-man force, is capable enough to carry the team forward. However, it is important to remember that the 5x All-Star played 159 games last season and 135 back in the 2023 season. So many matchups can take a toll on anyone, leaving them exhausted for postseason games. Therefore, having a pitcher like Alcantara to pick up the slack from time to time can only make the Dodgers stay on top.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Sandy Alcantara worth the gamble for the Dodgers, or should they hold onto their prospects?

Roki Sasaki continues to deal with a shoulder injury. This leaves the Dodgers to rely on a group of veterans to choose from for the pitching role. The 29-year-old, despite his recent poor stats, is still a good young hand to have behind Ohtani in his starts. Do you think that Alcantara would be a good fit with the Los Angeles Dodgers?
