When one is an athlete, injuries become a part of life. No matter how much someone might try to avoid them, playing on a professional level requires a rigorous regime that not everyone’s body can suffer through. Especially if it’s for long periods of time at a stretch. And as that lifestyle leads to injury, severe cases lead to surgery, as Lucas Gilbreath of the Colorado Rockies is learning.

A promising prospect, Gilbreath chose to play college baseball when he was selected in the 36th round of the 2014 MLB draft by the Rockies. But it seemed like fortune favored him because the team selected him once again in 2017, and he signed. After a mostly great 2022 season, Gilbreath had to receive a platelet-rich plasma injection because of an injury near his elbow. And now that saga is culminating in Tommy John surgery. Given the seriousness of the injury, no one would want to address this in an informal way. But the Rockies pitcher chose a different way to confirm the news.

Not everyone is comfortable announcing serious news on a serious issue, so Gilbreath took matters into his own hands. The 27-year-old took to social media to see what was trending and came up with the song ‘Sweet But Psycho’ by Ava Max.
Lucas Gilbreath, pitcher for the Colorado Rockies, announced that he’s undergoing season ending Tommy John via a TiKTok video.

Ben Verlander from FOX Sports shared the TikTok clip on Twitter. Gilbreath posted a video to TikTok that shows his official picture in the Rockies uniform bouncing around with the Max song playing in the background. The song may be recent and TikTok maybe Gen Z’s app. But the photo flopping around was certainly reminiscent of the 2000s era.

The Rockies have lost players before the season has even begun
Gilbreath isn’t the only one who will have to sit out in the upcoming season. Second baseman Brendan Rodgers’ dislocated left shoulder has turned more serious, as multiple MRIs showed. Rockies manager Bud Black told MLB.com, “That’s the frustrating thing for Brendan and for us, because we’ve talked about his place on this team and where he is in his career…This setback is a tough one because I really do think that he was ready for a big year.”

And it’s not just these two players. Right-handed pitcher Jake Bird is also expected to miss the season because of an oblique strain. Gilbreath’s presence as a solid reliever will be missed this year, but Gavin Hollowell and Nick Mears could have a chance at being added to the bullpen now.
