The Boston Red Sox were in prayer, hoping that the anchor of their team and the one keeping their postseason dreams alive would have a great result at the MRI. But it hasn’t. Roman Anthony, after another stunning performance with the Guardians, had left with an oblique tightness. And it had Boston in a chokehold.

Anthony, while awaiting an MRI, had mentioned that, “I’m hoping for the best and staying positive. But any time I’m not out there … it sucks.” But alas, it seems like that’s not the case. Now, less than just 24 hours after the star rookie left the game, the Boston Red Sox are said to place him on the injured list.

Both Chris Cotillo and Boston Strong confirmed Alex Cora’s news on their social media handles. And it is looking like a 4 to 6 week hiatus for the star rookie.

Skipper Alex Cora mentioned on WEEI, “He’s going on the IL. He has an oblique strain. Timetable, we don’t know… usually takes from 4 to 6 weeks.” And just like that, the Boston Red Sox are split down the middle, trying to stay afloat and simply half in panic. And it all happened because of the wretched incident when playing the Guardians on Tuesday.

The game was going great, and Boston powered their way to an 11-7 win. But then the victory came at a steep price. In the fourth inning, Anthony swung at a 3-2 curveball, and then suddenly a wave of pain surfaced on his face. He then grabbed his side and walked straight to the dugout. One didn’t need an MRI, actually, to know that something was off. Nate Eaton then had to step in for him, but honestly, the damage was done. And NESN, infact, had already sounded the alarm, and well it came true.

Boston fans want to throw up with Roman Anthony news

Talking about this nightmare scenario, one user said, “I feel like throwing up.” This actually might be the fan sentiment all around in Boston. Because Anthony was not just another rookie, he was the spark behind Boston’s resurgence. The numbers, after all, don’t lie, and over 54 games he has been the most dangerous bat in the AL. He is first in multi-hit games (24), third in on-base percentage (.421) and total hits (68), fourth in batting average (.329), and seventh in OPS (.933). This is epic anyway, and more so coming from a 21-year-old.

One hopeful user said, “That su—, but we must continue to hang in there. We can still win games. Go Red Sox!” Now Boston has to move on, and given that, they will be recalling Nick Sogard. He is no Anthony, but he has potential and, most importantly, is versatile. The 26-year-old has played in 18 games this season and has batted .242 with three doubles and five RBI. So he could give that depth, and he will be active for the series finale against the Guardians.

One fan on X said, “Very sad to hear.” And this is what Boston seems to be reeling from. Anthony truly has been the savior for the Red Sox’s season. Since he was called up on June 9, the 21-year-old has done nothing but great things for the team. He was hitting .292 with eight home runs and 32 RBIs before heading to the IL. He is even projected to be the runner-up for the AL Rookie of the Year. So indeed it’s sad news for the Red Sox fans.

“It wraps,” said a user on X, and the sentiment is understandable. But even then, it’s not like it’s all doom and gloom for the Sox. See, the season is not over yet, and still 22 games are left on the calendar, and hence they are very much still in the fight. Plus, the Boston Red Sox are tied with their rival Yankees for the second wild card spot. They are sitting six games ahead of the Rangers, too. In the AL East, both Boston and New York trail behind the Toronto Blue Jays by a meager 2 ½ games. So, yes, it might feel bleak for now, but they can overcome it.

Devastated, one person said, “Both he and the Red Sox season are CLEARLY over.” But this is honestly not the sentiment that is going on in the clubhouse. Cora, for once, doesn’t think they are done saying, “We put ourselves in a great position to fight for the division and win the division. Nothing’s going to change. We’re a man down, but somebody’s going to step up and come here and contribute. We’re going to be OK.”

Whether this is confidence or just false assurance, well, the further games will tell.
