The Mets are set to make history! Before you get excited, it’s for all the wrong reasons. Remember how in 2002 the Red Sox were 45-24 after 69; in 2003, the Mariners were 47-22 through the same stretch. Even after having a great start, they couldn’t make it to the playoffs. The NYM can be the next in line. A team that was riding high at 45-24 in mid-season has completely lost its way in recent weeks. They lost to Texas 8-3 last night, with six runs scored against them in the first inning, leaving Citi Field silent. As if it wasn’t enough, it looked like the DJ failed to read the…entire stadium.

The Rangers were already up 6-0 in the first inning, and the tension was high in the Citifield air. Fans watched in utter silence as their team teetered on the brink of another catastrophe. The Mets prospect Jonah Tong had just been tagged for run after run. Then, out of the blue, the DJ played a song with the loud words, ‘Citi Field, let’s get the party started!’ The timing was terrible. It made the loss hurt even more.

Jomboy Media quickly posted the video on X, with the caption: “Mets in stadium DJ is ready to party after the Mets gave up six runs in the first as they look to avoid their seventh straight loss.” It didn’t take long for the post to go viral. Even the commentator couldn’t help but notice how awkward it was, and his reaction, “Oh God,” summed up what every Mets fan was feeling.

The Mets struggled on the field, falling behind by 6 runs early on. They only scored three runs and never looked like they could make a comeback. Things got worse when Jeff McNeil was ejected in the fourth inning after arguing with umpire Scott Barry about a called third strike. Jacob deGrom threw the pitch, and McNeil assumed it was ball four. He slammed his bat toward the dugout, yelled about how mad he was, and then was thrown out.

This made an already bad night even worse. Fans watched their team lose again at Citi Field, which should have been vibrating with playoff-race enthusiasm. Instead, it sat flat and restless. With this loss, the Mets have jeopardized their playoff chances. They began the night with a 1.5-game lead over the Giants and Reds for the final NL wild card spot, but their losing streak is closing that gap. After having the best record in baseball in June, they now have one of the worst in the second half of the season. And missing the playoffs would mark a shocking collapse in MLB history.

Fans, who were anyways teetering on the verge of despair over their team’s performance, completely lost their cool after the DJ mishap.

Fan Reactions: DJ in the hot seat

When your team’s collapsing and your DJ’s celebrating, fans are bound to be angry. One fan commented, “They can dance right out of the playoff hunt.” After falling to 76-72, the Mets hold the final NL Wild Card spot, but their lead over the Giants and Reds has shrunk to 2 games. From now on, every game is a must-win, but the question is, can they do it?

For some fans, the moment triggered painful memories from the 2022 postseason. “The DJ played ‘All I Do is Win’ in the middle of the 2022 Game 1 wild-card disaster. Same vibes.”  Back in 2022, on October 7, the Padres beat the Mets 7-1 at Citi Field. Yu Darvish pitched seven excellent innings, giving up only one run. Josh Bell, Manny Machado, Jurickson Profar, and Trent Grisham all hit home runs off of Max Scherzer, who gave up four home runs and seven runs.

A plea, “Oh my god. Read the room for Christ sake.” Who will be in the mood for a party when your team has given a comfortable 6-run lead? Yeah, exactly, DJ must have known it. Or does he have no idea how things work in baseball? That’s exactly what the other comment read, “Hope he knows it’s a baseball game and not a frat party.” Everything has its time and place. “Party time” isn’t on the schedule when your team is circling the drain in front of 41,040 fans, and the DJ must know that!

Even the broadcast team’s reaction became part of the story. “Keith’s reaction is perfect lol.” Keith Hernandez has seen it all in his years with the Mets, first as a player and then as a commentator. His reaction, “Oh God,” to the DJ’s mistake probably weighed on someone who knows how the game affects people’s emotions and how the series might hurt itself.

It wasn’t just another loss on Friday night. It was a picture of a franchise going downhill at the wrong moment. The Mets lost their seventh game in a row, putting them on the verge of wasting a season that had promised so much.
