Patrick Mahomes’ connection with baseball is well-known. His father, Pat Mahomes, played as a pitcher for the likes of the Mets, Red Sox, and Twins, among others, in his 11-year MLB career. Patrick has also been a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals since 2020. But which team did the Chiefs’ star support, growing up?

The answer is the New York Mets. In an interview with KMBC News on Thursday, Patrick elaborated on his fond memories of New York. “It’s some of my best memories. Just my dad being on the Mets and playing in those National League Championship Series versus the Braves or playing in the World Series versus the Yankees. When I first remembered the stuff. I don’t the what the rules were back then, but they had me out on the field and I was taking ground balls with like Derek Jeter,” Mahomes recalled.

But here’s where some fans pointed out an issue with Mahomes’ comments. His dad never played in the postseason for the Mets. Sure, he was part of the roster in the regular season, but did not make the cut for the postseason.

Talking about his stats, they weren’t flashy, as he finished with a 5.47 ERA. But in 1999, he had a standout moment. Coming out of the bullpen 39 times that season, he went 8–0. Thus, playing a key role in helping the Mets make the playoffs.

However, even though the Mets went on to reach the World Series that year against the Yankees, Mahomes Sr. wasn’t included on the postseason roster. So, while he did pitch for the Mets in the NLCS, he never actually got the chance to play in the World Series itself. Now, despite his forte in the NFL, Patrick Mahomes maintains his connection with baseball.

Baseball plays a huge role for Patrick Mahomes

Baseball has always been a big part of Patrick Mahomes’ life, thanks to his dad. With his dad and grandad belonging to the baseball community, Mahomes grew up around the game. So, it was only natural that he picked it up himself. And with the kind of athletic ability he shows every Sunday in the NFL, it’s no shock he was pretty good at it early on.

So, let’s get back to 2010. Just before he was lighting up defenses in the pros, Mahomes actually appeared on ESPN as a shortstop for a team from Tyler, Texas, that finished runner-up to Taipei in the Junior League World Series.

And, of course, he played as a pitcher. And his arm strength, which we now see on full display in football, also carried over to the mound. In high school, Mahomes was firing fastballs in the low 90s. He also mixed in a curveball that scouts thought could really fool hitters.

Hence, even though Patrick Mahomes chose football as a career, baseball is still very much in his life.
