Most of Pete Alonso’s social media still shows his Mets pride. However, his new profile picture says otherwise. It used to feature him in a Mets jersey, and now it doesn’t. It may not confirm anything, but it does hint that his time in Queens could be nearing its end. Pete Alonso remains a key piece of the Mets’ offense. However, the question is whether David Stearns is ready to invest in an aging power hitter or not.

It doesn’t seem like he is, at least as per Ken Rosenthal. “Now, Father Time is undefeated, and that’s the reason the Mets are going to be reluctant to extend or to sign Alonso into his mid- and late 30s. This was the problem last offseason as well, but Alonzo is an extremely productive player coming off a great year. And I expect he’s going to do better than he did last year with no qualifying offer.”
Rosenthal’s view aligns with how Stearns has operated since taking over as President of Baseball Operations, preferring players with stronger defensive profiles and avoiding long-term risk on aging sluggers. According to Sports Illustrated, Stearns has “never seemed eager to commit” to Alonso beyond short-term deals, even after his resurgence in 2025.

Further, he added, “Will it be the Mets? I’m not sure it will be the Mets. I have never gotten the impression that President of Baseball Operations David Stearns wants Alonzo long-term, but we’ll see how free agency goes. It seems to me teams like Boston and others will be more interested in Alonso this time around, teams that need power badly.”

That uncertainty grew louder after Alonso officially opted out of his two-year, $54 million deal just a day after the Mets were eliminated from playoff contention. The contract, signed last winter, included an opt-out clause after the first year, something Alonso made clear he would exercise if he bounced back offensively. He did just that, hitting .272 with 38 home runs, 41 doubles, and 126 RBIs, his best average yet, while leading the National League in doubles. The decision, reported by Jon Heyman of the New York Post and confirmed by The Sporting News, made Alonso one of the top free agents on the market this offseason.

Now, the Mets’ $147 million first baseman is set to be one of the most sought-after names in free agency. After becoming the Mets’ all-time home run leader with 264, Alonso’s strong 2025 campaign erased doubts about his 2024 slump and reinforced his reputation as one of MLB’s premier power hitters.
Still, the team didn’t offer him a long-term deal last offseason. If that doesn’t change now, the Mets could lose him. Alonso has hit 37 or more home runs in each of the past five seasons.

While he’s not a standout defender at first, he’s worked hard to improve and has been incredibly durable. Alonso played all 162 games in each of the last two years. Notably, he’s expected to decline his $24 million player option after earning $30 million in 2025. Up next, he’s expected to land a 6-year deal valued at around $182 million. However, several insiders believe the final number could climb higher if a bidding war develops, with one front office executive telling The Athletic that Alonso could “push north of $190 million” if multiple big-market teams enter the race.
If the Mets move on from Alonso, Philadelphia won’t be the only team in the mix for his services. There’s another contender that could just as likely land him.

Could Mets first baseman move to Boston?
The Boston Red Sox aren’t far from reclaiming their spot as one of the American League’s top teams. However, they’ll need to stay aggressive this offseason to get there.
Last year, they backed up their words with action. After missing out on Juan Soto and Max Fried, they didn’t take much time to bring in Alex Bregman and Garrett Crochet.
And now, according to MassLive’s Christopher Smith, Pete Alonso could be Boston’s biggest signing this offseason. And honestly, that sounds like a smart move.

The idea of Pete Alonso heading to Boston has been gaining traction in recent weeks.
Even Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic believes that the Red Sox will make a strong push for the Mets slugger. In fact, The Athletic’s Will Sammon and Tim Britton have also listed Boston as a potential fit for the five-time All-Star.
In a nutshell, the Mets could try to make Alonso stay but the thought of Alonso in a Red Sox or Phillies uniform isn’t far-fetched at all.
With Alonso, the Red Sox could easily have one of the most dangerous offenses in the league. It would transform them from a team with offensive uncertainty into one ready to contend.
