Check the journey of the Mets this year, and you’ll know what an unreal downfall looks like. Since their MLB’s best record (45-24) from the Opening Day through June 12, they’re now deadlocked at 80-76 for the final NL Wild Card! And the Mets are still going south with the latest being on Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Nationals. Meanwhile, the Reds hold the head-to-head tiebreaker. That means if both teams finish with the same record, it’s Cincinnati that moves on!

And adding to the frustration, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza once again leaned on the same message he’s been repeating for weeks. Fans are starting to lose patience.
“You look at the talent there, we’re one hit away, making one play, making one pitch. We’re close,” Mendoza stated after their loss against the Nationals. “We just haven’t been able to get that last hit like I said, to make that play when we need to, or to execute a pitch. It could happen.“

So, while Mendoza is still hopeful that the team is just one hit away from regaining its form, the wait to get that one hit is just getting longer.
Carlos Mendoza was asked what gives him confidence the Mets can do what they need to do to make the playoffs:

Fans aren’t buying into Mendoza’s statement this time. Because till July 27, the Mets were leading the NL East by a game and a half. Now, after dropping 11 of their last 15, they’ve put their entire postseason hopes in jeopardy.
And Sunday’s loss was the perfect snapshot of their collapse.
Sloppy mistakes mixed with some bad luck. Sean Manaea is back in the rotation after more than a week. But he couldn’t get through more than three innings, giving up three runs in the second. So, with the team performing horribly and the manager scripting the same hope, fans had started to raise calls against the skipper and the Mets president, David Stearns.
What’s your perspective on:
With a $340 million payroll, should Mets fans expect more than just a Wild Card chase?

The Mets’ front office gets called out by fans
There’s a similarity between the Yankees’ Aaron Boone and Carlos Mendoza. Apart from both representing New York teams, they are both now on the hot seat with firing calls all around. While Boone’s job security is based on how deep the Yankees could go in the postseason, Mendoza’s situation is worse. “If they don’t make the playoffs, clearly Mendoza is out,” one fan remarked. The Mets are yet to get confirmed for the playoffs, and if anything goes wrong despite having such a star-studded clubhouse, Mendoza would be the one to get the first beating.
“Aaron Boone effect,” added another user. The emotion was almost the same throughout the post. “Fire this guy after the season,” wrote another.

“We shouldn’t be one hit or one play away. We’re better than that. This is insanity.” Fans have clearly reached a boiling point here. With approximately $340 million payroll for the roster, the Mets were expected to steamroll their rivals. And why not! If the offense lineup of a team is stuffed with names like Juan Soto, Pete Alonso, and Francisco Lindor, they shouldn’t wait for the final Wild Card spot.
And then came the fans’ message for the Mets’ owner, Steve Cohen. “Carlos Mendoza cannot continue as manager regardless of whether the Mets make the playoffs or not…“ With that came another jab towards David Stearns.

One fan remarked, “F— off. Go away. & take Stearns with you!”
In fact, the trades made by Stearns were also pointed out as botched moves. One comment read, “Every move Stearns has made in 2025 has hurt them, with the lone exception of Clay Holmes. Soto/Alonso were Steven Cohen signs, and they are the two reasons they’re even in a position to make the playoffs. But Stearns’ pitching staff has been brutal. The prospects saved them.“

The trading of Ryan Helsley from the Cardinals was considered one of the biggest moves by the Mets at the trade deadline. Result? 8.47 ERA with a 0-3 record with the Mets. In contrast, Helsley had a 3 ERA this year with the Cardinals. A few such botched trading moves made Stearns a no-go for the fans.
But no matter what decision the front office makes, the Mets are now simply at an edge to focus on anything else but their performance!
